What defines green dragons in D&D?
The current 2024 Basic Rules stat blocks identify green dragons as chromatic dragons with lawful evil alignment and poison immunity. The young, adult, and ancient entries also give them amphibious capability and Poison Breath. These are game traits, not descriptions of real animals.

The older D&D Beyond entry for an adult green dragon calls green dragons “the most cunning and treacherous of true dragons” and associates them with misdirection and trickery. That page is explicitly marked legacy and warns that it does not reflect the latest rules and lore, so it should be understood as prior-edition characterization—not definitive wording for the 2024 entry. What is new about green dragons in the 2024 Monster Manual?
The update is a new presentation of dragons, not evidence that every green-dragon tradition was discarded. D&D Beyond says the 2024 Monster Manual gives dragons updated art and lore, revised stat blocks, and information for each stage of dragon evolution. Its accompanying description of the book says it contains more than 500 monsters and uses streamlined stat blocks designed to be easier to run. How do young, adult, and ancient green dragons differ?
Age changes the dragon’s scale in game terms: size, hit points, challenge rating, and the range and damage of Poison Breath all increase in the official 2024 Basic Rules examples. The figures below are fictional game statistics, not real-world measurements. The D&D Beyond 2024 Basic Rules stat blocks provide the mechanics.

In these stat blocks, failed saving throws are specified for the young dragon’s breath entry. The adult and ancient damage figures are the listed damage for their Poison Breath; the figures are not evidence about how a particular encounter will play out. All three entries use Rend attacks as well as offering spellcasting options. The wyrmling is included in the 2024 Monster Manual index, but its full values are not given in the cited Basic Rules examples.
What does a green dragon breathe?
The young, adult, and ancient green dragons in the 2024 Basic Rules use Poison Breath: a cone of poison damage that grows in range and damage with age. Its listed reach expands from 30 feet for the young dragon to 60 feet for the adult and 90 feet for the ancient dragon. The damage in each stat block is listed alongside the age-stage comparison above.

What does “new era” mean here?
“New era” refers to the 2024 rules presentation: the Monster Manual updates dragon art and lore and revises stat blocks, while the Basic Rules supply current examples of the mechanics. It does not mean that one legacy description can be treated as the complete current account, or that all prior green-dragon lore was replaced. For a specific green dragon at the table, use its current stat block and the relevant 2024 book rather than relying on a legacy webpage.
