A ruling was expected on November 26, 2026, according to reporting published the following day. As of October 8, 2026, the appeal outcome and any trial date had not been reported. Depardieu denies wrongdoing; the order to stand trial is not a conviction.
What the case concerns
Charlotte Arnould accused Depardieu of rape and sexual assault in connection with two alleged incidents at his Paris home in August 2018. Le Monde reported that Depardieu acknowledged intimate encounters on August 7 and 13, 2018, while denying digital penetration and that the encounters were nonconsensual. He denies wrongdoing in the case.
In August 2025, an investigating judge ordered Depardieu to stand trial on the allegations. He appealed that order. The order is a procedural decision to send the case to trial, not a finding of guilt.
What happened at the appeal hearing
The Paris Court of Appeal heard the challenge on September 17, 2026. The hearing was held behind closed doors, Le Dauphiné Libéré reported. The defense argued that there was no charge sufficient to retain against Depardieu; prosecutors asked the court to confirm the trial order. A ruling was expected on November 26, 2026. That expected date had not yet arrived as of October 8, 2026, so the outcome should not be treated as known.

What the reported order says about the evidence
Le Monde’s account of the August 2025 order said the investigating judge described Arnould’s statements as clear and consistent and Depardieu’s accounts as changing. The report also said the judge cited home surveillance footage in support of Arnould’s account. These are descriptions of the investigative order as reported by Le Monde, not findings from a completed trial.
Le Monde also reported that prosecutors cited a gynecological examination in their 2024 final submissions. That was a prosecution submission, not an independently established conclusion or a court finding.
How the case reached the appeal
- August 2018: Arnould filed a complaint, according to Le Dauphiné Libéré.
- June 2019: The Paris prosecutor closed the initial inquiry, reporting that the alleged offense was considered insufficiently characterized.
- Summer 2020: A later complaint led to the appointment of an investigating judge. Depardieu was formally placed under investigation on December 16, 2020, the same report said.
- August 2025: An investigating judge ordered Depardieu to stand trial. He appealed the order.
- September 17, 2026: The appeal was heard. A ruling was expected on November 26, 2026.
Do not confuse this with Depardieu’s other case
Depardieu’s 2025 conviction for sexually assaulting two women on the 2021 film set of Les Volets verts is a separate proceeding. The Associated Press reported an 18-month suspended sentence in that case. Le Dauphiné Libéré reported that a separate appeal hearing was scheduled for November 16–20, 2026. That conviction is not the outcome of Arnould’s case, which remained pending as of October 8, 2026.

The next reported step in the Arnould case was the appeal ruling expected on November 26, 2026. The reviewed reporting did not establish a trial date. Arnould’s lawyer, Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, described the 2025 order as a “form of judicial truth”; that was her characterization while the case awaited trial, not a court verdict.
