What makes the Gérald Genta Only Watch 2023 unique?
The watch brings a playful character dial together with a technically ambitious movement. Gérald Genta’s official lot description calls it the first Gérald Genta watch to combine a retrograde-minute display, jumping hours and a minute repeater. The same description says Genta had sketched the concept but had not brought it to realization; that is the maker’s account of the design’s history.
The creation was also presented as a celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of Genta’s first watch under his own name, in 1973. Independent coverage interprets the octagonal case and Mickey dial as references to Genta’s Success and Fantasy designs; that is the publication’s reading, not a maker-stated design explanation. How do Mickey’s minute display and the other functions work?
Retrograde minutes
Mickey’s right arm points around an arc marked from 0 to 60. As the minutes progress, the arm moves across the scale; at the end of its sweep, it returns to the start, which is the defining retrograde action.

Jumping hours
A small aperture at 3 o’clock displays the hour. Rather than advancing continuously around a conventional hour hand, the indicated hour changes in a jump.
Minute repeater
Pressing the repeater activates chimes that sound the time on demand. Europa Star describes the mechanism as a two-hammer minute repeater and confirms the jumping-hour and retrograde-minute functions. The official Only Watch listing gave the watch an estimate of CHF 350,000–500,000. A Timekeepers Club results roundup reports that Lot 16 sold for CHF 170,000 at Only Watch 2024, held on 10 May 2024 at Geneva’s Palexpo under Christie’s. The CHF 170,000 figure is the secondary report’s result, not a result confirmed by the official lot page cited here. The 2023 in the watch’s name should not be mistaken for its reported auction year.
