There is no reliable current figure for Geoffrey Rush’s net worth in the sources reviewed. Public reporting does give a few financial figures tied to his career and defamation case, but earnings, a film payment, court damages and an agreed lost-earnings amount are not a calculation of his assets minus liabilities.
Why there is no reliable net-worth figure
A net-worth estimate requires a picture of assets and debts at a particular time. The public figures available here instead describe selected income over a past period and payments connected with one film and a court case. They do not establish how much Rush retained, what he owns, what he owes or the value of any assets.

Accordingly, celebrity-net-worth estimates should not be treated as verified facts unless they disclose a reliable method and evidence. The figures below are useful context, not substitutes for a personal balance sheet.
What the reported career figures mean
Almost A$38 million in reported earnings
ABC reported in 2019 that court-submission material disclosed almost A$38 million earned by Rush between 2003 and 2017. This is a historical gross-earnings figure as reported from submissions; it does not show taxes, expenses, investment returns or the amount remaining as wealth. ABC News, 11 April 2019.

A reported A$2 million for Gods of Egypt
The same ABC report said Rush was paid A$2 million for his role in the 2016 film Gods of Egypt. That is a reported payment for one role, not an annual salary or a current net-worth figure. ABC News, 11 April 2019.
What the defamation case awarded and agreed
A$850,000 in initial damages
In April 2019, the Federal Court awarded Rush A$850,000 in initial damages for harm to reputation. Lost-income damages were left to be resolved separately, so this award alone was not a total valuation of lost earnings. ABC News, 23 May 2019.

A further A$2 million agreed for lost earnings
ABC reported in May 2019 that the parties agreed on a further A$2 million for lost earnings. Sydney media-law specialist Sophie Dawson told ABC that it was an agreed figure, not an amount assessed by the court after evaluating evidence of loss. It should therefore be described as an agreed lost-earnings payment, not as a judicial finding about Rush’s total career losses or his net worth. ABC News, 23 May 2019.
Why the much larger future-loss figures are not wealth estimates
Rush’s legal team argued that future economic loss could reach A$25.3 million. ABC reported that accountant Terrence Potter modeled alternative ten-year scenarios: A$4.8 million if future acting work fell by 25%, and A$20.3 million if it fell by 75%. These were assumption-based scenarios presented in submissions, not amounts awarded, money necessarily received or estimates of current net worth. ABC News, 11 April 2019.

Legal context behind the damages
In its April 2019 report, ABC said Justice Michael Wigney found the publisher and journalist had failed to prove the published imputations true. The judge described the publication as “recklessly irresponsible pieces of sensationalist journalism of the very worst kind,” as quoted by ABC. That finding explains the case context; it does not turn the damages into a measure of Rush’s total wealth. ABC News, 11 April 2019.
The Federal Court’s public online file provides access to judgments and filings in the case. For detailed claims about later appellate proceedings, consult the relevant judgment rather than relying on a preview published ahead of an expected appeal decision.
