Two dogs were found alive at Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa-Hackman’s Santa Fe home after a third dog was found dead in February 2025. Why later details became public
Santa Fe County announced on April 15, 2025, that it was releasing redacted investigative records pursuant to a court order. The initial February reports said the couple’s causes and manners of death were undetermined. Later, authorities attributed Hackman’s death to heart disease, with Alzheimer’s disease contributing, and Arakawa’s death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, as reported by the Associated Press. These later findings about the couple are separate from the state veterinary laboratory’s reported conclusion about Zinna. Associated Press timeline
