Gene Hackman’s fortune was reported as about $80 million, but that figure is a press estimate—not a verified accounting of his assets. A March 2025 Us Weekly report said it reviewed will documents naming his wife, Betsy Arakawa, as beneficiary and successor trustee. Those reported terms do not establish who ultimately received the estate.
How much was Gene Hackman’s fortune?
The figure reported was about $80 million. Us Weekly attributed that estimate to the Daily Mail; its March 14, 2025, article did not provide a complete asset list or valuation method. The amount should therefore be treated as a reported estimate, not a confirmed net-worth total or an official estate inventory. Us Weekly’s report on the will and fortune estimate.
What did Hackman’s will reportedly say?
Us Weekly said it confirmed details from documents: Hackman’s will named Arakawa as beneficiary and successor trustee, and had not been updated since June 2005. The report also said his three children were not listed in the will. These are reported details about the will; they do not, by themselves, show the final distribution of assets or resolve how any other estate arrangements applied.
When were Hackman and Arakawa found, and when did authorities say they died?
The couple were found at their home in Santa Fe on February 26, 2025. That discovery date is different from the likely dates of death later given by authorities: Arakawa likely died on February 11, and Hackman likely died on February 18, according to the Associated Press’s account of the March 7 medical findings. Authorities classified both deaths as natural causes. They said Arakawa likely died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman likely died from heart disease, with Alzheimer’s disease a significant contributing factor. At the March 7 news conference, New Mexico chief medical investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell said Hackman “had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that’s what resulted in his death.” The AP also reported Jarrell said it was “quite possible he was not aware she was deceased.”

A will’s reported terms should not be mistaken for a final accounting or a confirmed transfer of property. The Independent’s March 2025 coverage described uncertainty around the disposition and reported that Arakawa’s will left most of her assets to Hackman, while reportedly including a provision concerning deaths within 90 days. That is secondary reporting, not a definitive legal determination of who inherited either estate. The Independent’s report on the wills and estate uncertainty.

The available reporting does not establish a verified breakdown of Hackman’s assets or the eventual recipients of the estates. The $80 million figure and the accounts of the wills should be read as reported claims, not as a settled inventory or final distribution.
