Rowlands died at her home in Indian Wells, California, on August 14, 2024, aged 94. The Los Angeles Times reported that she had Alzheimer’s disease after a years-long battle. Her son, filmmaker Nick Cassavetes, had spoken publicly about her diagnosis in a June 2024 interview.

Born Virginia Cathryn Rowlands in Madison, Wisconsin, on June 19, 1930, she built a career across film, television, and theatre. The Television Academy records her birth and passing dates in its biography and awards listing.
Why is Gena Rowlands associated with The Notebook?
In Nick Cassavetes’ 2004 film The Notebook, adapted from a Nicholas Sparks love story, Rowlands played the older version of Allie. The role brought her to a newer generation of moviegoers, though it was one part of a much broader body of work.

In a 2016 interview quoted by the Los Angeles Times, Rowlands said, “I didn’t think it would have that kind of impact.” She added that she thought the film resonated because “it was about the realization that love can last your whole life.”
What films defined her collaboration with John Cassavetes?
Rowlands and John Cassavetes made ten films together. Their partnership was a defining thread in her career: she brought an intense, emotionally exposed presence to his independent films, including two performances that earned her Academy Award nominations for lead actress.
- A Woman Under the Influence (1974): Rowlands received an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Mabel Longhetti.
- Gloria (1980): Her performance as the title character earned a second lead-actress Oscar nomination.
Rowlands received an honorary Academy Award in 2015. Accepting it, she described acting as a way to inhabit many lives: “What’s great about being an actress is you don’t just live one life, you live many lives. You are not just stuck with yourself all of your life.”

Rowlands’ career extended well beyond the films most often associated with her. She made her Broadway debut in Middle of the Night in 1956 and her big-screen debut in The High Cost of Loving in 1958. The Los Angeles Times described her film and television work as spanning six decades.
