Garth Brooks denied allegations of rape and other unwanted sexual conduct made by a former makeup artist and hairstylist in a civil complaint filed in October 2024. The allegations are disputed and, according to the latest procedural account reviewed here, no court had made findings on their truth. That account reported the California case stayed while related Mississippi litigation proceeded, with an appeal over the plaintiff’s use of a pseudonym still unresolved as of October 5, 2026.
What the complaint alleges
A former makeup artist and hairstylist, identified in the California filing as Jane Roe, sued Brooks in Los Angeles County on October 3, 2024. ABC News reported that the complaint alleges Brooks raped her during a professional trip to Los Angeles in May 2019 and describes other alleged unwanted sexual conduct. These are claims in the complaint, not established events. ABC News’ account of the complaint and the plaintiff’s law firm’s filing announcement describe the allegations from their respective perspectives.

Wigdor LLP, counsel for the plaintiff, said: “We applaud our client’s courage in moving forward with her complaint against Garth Brooks.” That is the law firm’s advocacy statement, not an independent finding.
How Brooks responded
In a statement reported by ABC News on October 4, 2024, Brooks denied the accusations. He said he had filed a lawsuit anonymously in Mississippi nearly a month earlier to address what he characterized as extortion and defamation. The plaintiff’s attorney disputed Brooks’s description of settlement demands; neither side’s account is a court finding.

Brooks said: “I trust the system, I do not fear the truth, and I am not the man they have painted me to be.” The quote reflects his response to the allegations; it does not resolve them.
What the latest reported case status shows
An attorney-reviewed status explainer last checked October 7, 2026, reported procedural developments through October 5, 2026. It describes two related civil cases: Brooks’s September 2024 federal suit in Mississippi and the plaintiff’s October 2024 California action, which was moved to federal court and reported stayed pending the Mississippi case.
- In September 2025, a Mississippi judge denied the plaintiff’s request to proceed under a pseudonym.
- The plaintiff appealed that ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
- As of the status explainer’s October 5, 2026 check, it reported no appellate decision, trial date, or settlement.
The explainer said it could not retrieve either court docket. These details therefore describe the latest reported status in that account, not a live docket check. See the case-status explainer for its reporting.

Venue, a stay, and whether a plaintiff may use a pseudonym are procedural questions. They do not determine whether the alleged conduct occurred. In the latest reviewed status account, no court had made findings on the underlying allegations. The plaintiff’s claims and Brooks’s denial should therefore be treated as disputed positions unless a court resolves them.
