Agatha All Along was promoted by cast members as Marvel’s “gayest” show, but that was playful shorthand—not an official ranking. The stronger evidence is more specific: showrunner Jac Schaeffer said Agatha and Rio’s chemistry was written into the premiere, while an early-season reading of the series found their scenes suggestive of a past romance without making Agatha’s identity explicit.
Why the cast called it Marvel’s “gayest” show
During premiere-era promotion, actor Ali Ahn described Agatha All Along as “the gayest show on Marvel,” according to a September 18, 2024, Variety report hosted by Yahoo. The report described a discussion involving Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza and Joe Locke. The remark captures the cast’s anticipation and the show’s queer sensibility; it is not a formal Marvel designation or a measurable comparison with other Marvel productions. Is Agatha Harkness gay in the series?
The available early episodes encouraged that question but did not explicitly settle it. In an October 3, 2024, guide covering the first four episodes, Out read Agatha and Rio’s dynamic as strongly suggestive of a former romantic relationship while noting that Agatha’s identity had not been stated outright by that point. The guide is an early-season snapshot, not a verdict on the complete series. Out’s early-season queer guide to Agatha All Along.
Are Agatha and Rio exes?
Viewers had reason to interpret them that way. Their flirtatious, relationship-coded exchanges, a discussion of scars and an almost-kiss could suggest shared romantic history, though the scenes also leave room for subtext and strategic provocation within the plot. Schaeffer confirmed that the chemistry was intentional. In a September 23, 2024, interview with TheWrap, she said: “It is on the page. Like it is on the page that there is crackling chemistry between the two of them.” She also identified sexual tension as one way Rio unsettles Agatha in the premiere. What Schaeffer meant by the show’s queer energy
Schaeffer described the series’ sensibility as “joyous, dark, resplendent queer energy” and said, “It is my deepest hope that it is embraced as the love letter that it is,” as quoted by Out. She also spoke about an intersection between LGBTQ+ communities and witchcraft. These comments explain the creative atmosphere the show hoped to evoke; they do not independently establish the identity of every character.

Agatha Harkness first appeared in Fantastic Four #94 in 1969. Out notes that her comic-book history contains little explicit detail about romantic orientation. That history can provide character context, but it should not be treated as a definitive answer about the television version: comic continuity and the MCU series are distinct portrayals.
