A former makeup artist identified as Jane Roe filed a civil lawsuit in California accusing Garth Brooks of rape and other sexual misconduct. Brooks denies the allegations and filed a separate lawsuit in Mississippi alleging that the accusations were false and connected to demands for payment. The complaints set out opposing claims; neither one, by itself, establishes what happened.
What is the Garth Brooks lawsuit about?
Roe’s California complaint, filed October 3, 2024, alleges that Brooks sexually assaulted her, including raping her during a 2019 work trip to Los Angeles. It also alleges unwanted sexual conduct at Brooks’s home. These are claims in a civil pleading, not a criminal conviction or a judicial finding.
The complaint says Roe began doing hair and makeup for Trisha Yearwood in 1999 and began working for Brooks in 2017. It alleges that Brooks hired her more often after learning she was experiencing financial hardship. Those details are also allegations made in the complaint.
Claims and requested relief in California
Roe’s complaint brings six causes of action: assault, battery, sexual battery under California Civil Code section 1708.5, violations of the Bane Act and Ralph Act, and gender violence under Civil Code section 52.4. It requests compensatory and punitive damages, attorney fees, and a jury trial.

What has Garth Brooks said?
Brooks denies Roe’s accusations. In a public statement quoted by the Associated Press, he said: “I trust the system, I do not fear the truth, and I am not the man they have painted me to be.”
Brooks’s initial Mississippi federal complaint, filed September 13, 2024, says he learned of the allegations through a July demand letter. It describes an August letter as seeking a multi-million-dollar payment in exchange for not filing publicly, and characterizes the allegations as false. Brooks’s pleading says the accusations are “none of which has any basis in fact.” These statements convey his account and position; the letters and his characterization are not independently established by the pleadings alone.

Claims in the Mississippi case
Brooks’s Mississippi action asserts claims including defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and false light. ABC News reported on October 9, 2024, that Brooks later filed an amended complaint and named the plaintiff. Roe is referred to by the pseudonym she used in the California complaint.

What is the latest reported case status?
A procedural account published in 2026 describes developments through May of that year. It says the cases remained effectively stalled during an appeal concerning the use of pseudonyms, and that the Fifth Circuit denied a motion to expedite. That account does not verify what happened after May or establish the status of the appeal or trial-court cases on October 4, 2026.
Accordingly, the latest status reported here is date-limited: as of the May 2026 developments described in that account, the pseudonym dispute was before the Fifth Circuit and the trial-court cases were effectively stalled. The current docket status as of October 4, 2026, is not established by that report.
