GamesBeat Summit 2024’s “Hollywood and Games: A Long Awaited Love Affair” panel brought together people from games, animation, talent representation and investment to discuss the opportunities and challenges of adapting video-game properties for film and television. It took place in Los Angeles on May 21, 2024; GamesBeat’s post-event recap was published June 6.

When and where was the panel?

The session was scheduled for May 21, 2024, from 4:00 to 4:30 p.m. at GamesBeat Summit 2024 in Los Angeles. The conference agenda lists the venue as the Marina del Rey Marriott.

GamesBeat’s panel announcement previewed the discussion, while its later June 6 recap reported on what the panel covered.

Who spoke?

  • Derek Douglas of CAA, a talent agency, was a panelist.
  • Maureen Fan of Baobab Studios, an animation studio, was a panelist.
  • Josh Yguado of Jam City, a games company, was a panelist.
  • Peter Levin of Griffin Gaming Partners moderated.

These roles reflect how GamesBeat presented the participants in its 2024 coverage. The mix brought business and creative perspectives into the same conversation; it does not mean every panelist represented the same interests or reached the same conclusions.

What did the panel discuss about adapting games?

GamesBeat’s recap says the panel addressed Hollywood’s changing relationship with games, along with the opportunities and challenges of bringing game properties into more traditional film and television formats. The panel’s composition helps explain why those questions have several dimensions: a game company may focus on its worlds and characters, an animation studio on creative adaptation, an agent on talent and packaging, and an investor on business considerations. That is context for the range of perspectives in the session, not a claim that the panel endorsed one approach.

Yguado argued that games had become central to entertainment and that the industry had accumulated beloved worlds and characters that audiences spend substantial time with. GamesBeat’s recap quoted him saying, “I’m a huge believer of gaming being at the very center of what entertainment is … I’m actually shocked that there haven’t been more adaptations sooner. For the last 40 years, we’ve been accumulating this treasure trove of worlds and characters that are beloved, that people are spending literally thousands of hours with. The fact that we’re realizing now that this is a great source of television and film IP is something we should have realized a long time ago.”

Which adaptations did GamesBeat name?

In its May 15 preview, GamesBeat used several prominent adaptations to illustrate what it described as a growing trend. The examples were Mario, Arcane, Sonic, Fallout, Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Last of Us. They were examples in the article’s framing, not a complete catalogue or an endorsement of any particular adaptation.

The preview also reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had earned more than $1.36 billion at the box office. That is a historical figure attributed to GamesBeat’s 2024 preview, not a current box-office total. The same preview said GamesBeat had been told that more than 40 game adaptations into movies were in development; it did not identify an underlying source or method for that estimate, so it should be treated as an attributed report rather than an independently verified count.

Is a recording of the panel available?
