Other Westeros projects have been reported at different stages, from development to shelving, while several have no confirmed public status. The “14” in the headline is not a verified count of 14 distinct projects: current reporting does not identify a complete, consistently counted roster. Here is what can be said about the named projects, and how strong the status evidence is, as of October 7, 2026.
What “greenlit,” “shelved” and “ghosted” mean here
Those labels are not interchangeable. A released or renewed series is an established production; a project described as being in development may be no more than a concept or script in progress. A pilot order is not a series order, and a report that a project has gone quiet does not prove HBO canceled it.
The distinction matters because the available reporting does not establish 14 individually identified projects with verified statuses. The named projects below are the ones that can be described from published accounts; additional animation ideas have been reported as a group without enough information to list them individually. Project statuses are attributed to the outlet or person reporting them rather than presented as HBO confirmations.
Named Game of Thrones successor projects and their reported status
| Project | Premise or reported format | What the available reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| House of the Dragon | Live-action series adapting material from Fire & Blood, set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones. | Released franchise series. HBO’s pressroom provides official renewal and scheduling context for franchise series; Vanity Fair’s 2026 roundup describes its source material and setting. This is not a speculative successor concept. |
| A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Live-action adaptation of the Dunk and Egg stories, about a century before Game of Thrones. | Established franchise production. TV Insider reported on August 13, 2026 that season two had wrapped filming and was expected to premiere in 2027. The premiere timing is a reported schedule, not a guarantee. |
| Aegon’s Conquest | A story about Aegon I’s conquest of Westeros. Reported formats differ: a theatrical event film in one account, and development in film and series forms in others. | Development has been reported, but the format and production status are not settled by the available accounts. TV Insider’s 2026 roundup describes a film; Tom’s Guide covers reports of film and series development. Neither description establishes a released project or a series order. |
| Nine Voyages / The Sea Snake | Animated project about Corlys Velaryon’s earlier voyages; initially discussed as live action. | TV Insider’s 2026 account says the format shifted to animation for budget reasons and reports that actor Steve Toussaint understood in June 2026 that it remained a possibility, while not knowing its stage. That is Toussaint’s account, not HBO confirmation or proof of an order. |
| 10,000 Ships | Reported live-action prequel about Nymeria and the Rhoynar migration. | TV Insider’s 2026 roundup reports that Eboni Booth was writing it. The available status evidence is secondary reporting; it does not establish a series order or production start. |
| The Golden Empire | Animated concept set in Yi Ti. | George R. R. Martin reported the project in 2022, according to the project summaries in TV Insider and Vanity Fair. Those 2026 roundups do not establish a current production stage; lack of recent updates is not confirmation of cancellation. |
| Arya Stark sequel report | Reported follow-up involving Arya Stark after the events of Game of Thrones. | TV Insider’s 2026 roundup says Deadline reported in January 2026 that a project was apparently in the works, with no subsequent update identified in that roundup. Vanity Fair also discusses a possible Quoc Dang Tran connection as reported. This is not a confirmed HBO order. |
| Jon Snow sequel | Proposed continuation following Jon Snow after the original series. | Kit Harington told the Associated Press on April 9, 2024: “There are no plans for it at the moment. It’s off the table for the foreseeable.” He said ideas had been discussed but none stuck. TV Insider’s 2026 roundup describes it as shelved indefinitely. The separate Arya report does not establish that the Jon Snow project has returned. |
| Bloodmoon / The Long Night | Historical prequel set thousands of years before Game of Thrones. | Vanity Fair and Winter Is Coming report that HBO canceled the project after a pilot was filmed. This is a reported past cancellation, not an active successor series. |
| Flea Bottom | Reported live-action concept about the poor quarter of King’s Landing. | Tom’s Guide and Winter Is Coming report that it did not move forward or was shelved. The evidence here does not establish an official HBO cancellation announcement. |
| Doom of Valyria concept | Reported concept about the destruction of Valyria. | Tom’s Guide reports that Max Borenstein developed a concept. It warns that “Empire of Ash,” sometimes attached to the idea, is an unverified alleged working title. The project’s present disposition is not established. |
| Robert’s Rebellion | Possible prequel about the rebellion that ended Targaryen rule in Westeros. | Vanity Fair’s 2026 account describes it as a possible prequel whose status remains undetermined, not as a confirmed HBO production. |
| Other animation concepts | Additional animated projects, not individually named in the available account. | Winter Is Coming reports that Martin said four animated spinoffs were at different stages of development during a 2024 Oxford Writers’ House talk. That supports a group of concepts, not a verified list of titles or current statuses. |
Which Game of Thrones spin-offs are actually happening?
House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are the established franchise productions in this roster. HBO’s pressroom announcement is the primary source for franchise renewal and scheduling context. The production milestone and expected premiere for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two are reported by TV Insider, not supplied by that HBO page.

For other titles, “in development,” “apparently in the works,” or an actor saying a concept may still be possible should not be read as a greenlight. In the information available here, those descriptions do not establish an HBO series order or a release date.
Is the Jon Snow show canceled?
Harington’s April 2024 statement to the Associated Press is the clearest direct public account: he said there were no plans and the idea was off the table for the foreseeable future. TV Insider’s 2026 roundup continues to describe it as shelved indefinitely. That supports calling it shelved, rather than describing it as an active project; it does not rule out every possible future revival.

Is Aegon’s Conquest a show or a movie?
Published descriptions do not agree on one settled format. TV Insider’s 2026 roundup calls it a theatrical event film, while Tom’s Guide covers reports that the story had been developed in film and series forms. Without a confirmed format and order, the accurate description is a reported project with conflicting format accounts—not a confirmed movie release or HBO series.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do lists give different totals?
There is no single, verified roster behind the “14” count. Totals can change depending on whether a list includes early pitches, later-reported projects, unnamed animation concepts, a theatrical film, or concepts that have since been reported shelved. Some accounts also describe the same idea in different ways or formats. A count is meaningful only when the list defines what qualifies and identifies each project separately.

For this reason, the named projects above should not be mistaken for a confirmed inventory of 14, nor should unnamed animation ideas be converted into invented titles to fill out a list. The strongest reading is that the franchise has two established successor series and a changing set of reported or proposed projects whose individual status varies.
