Ally Sheedy has said that supporting her transgender son, Beckett, taught her a great deal. In an account of a 2022 People interview reproduced by Them, she urged parents whose children are beginning transition to educate themselves, listen, and make room for their child’s choices.
What Sheedy said she learned
Them reported that Sheedy told People in 2022 that Beckett “doesn’t hide anything.” She also said she felt comfortable speaking with parents whose child was beginning the process of transition. The reporting presents her reflections as a parent’s account of learning alongside her son, rather than as a universal description of every family’s experience.

Her message to parents
Sheedy’s clearest advice, as quoted by Them, was: “Parents need to educate themselves.” She also expressed a hope that Beckett would have the freedom to make choices and a loving, supportive community around him.
That message is about a parent’s role: learn, listen, and support a child’s ability to make choices. The article does not detail particular medical or social steps, so it should not be read as a transition guide.

Beckett’s perspective on choice and pronouns
A 2024 Yahoo Entertainment recap says Sheedy and Beckett appeared together on a 2017 episode of Boom! Lawyered. The recap describes Beckett discussing the importance of having the power to choose how others identify him, including through pronouns, and notes that he had a supportive system.
