Yes, a Game of Thrones movie is in development. HBO and Max CEO Casey Bloys confirmed the project in November 2024, but described development as a process of testing whether the idea could become a story worthy of a theatrical release. Later reports named screenwriter Beau Willimon and a reported working title, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. No release date, cast, director, or confirmed plot synopsis has been established by the cited reports.

What is confirmed about the Game of Thrones movie?

The project’s status has developed in stages, and the statements should not be conflated. In November 2024, Bloys confirmed that a movie was being developed while emphasizing that HBO was still evaluating the idea. In March 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that Beau Willimon was writing a screenplay for Warner Bros. In April 2026, TheWrap reported that Warner Bros. shared the working title Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest at CinemaCon.

That is evidence of an active development effort, not a confirmation that filming is complete or that a finished film has been scheduled. The 2024 statement that the project was “very early in the process” describes its status at that time, not a current status update.

Who is writing the screenplay?

The Los Angeles Times reported in March 2026 that Beau Willimon was writing the Warner Bros. film. Willimon is the credited screenwriter of House of Cards and Andor, but the reporting does not establish further creative attachments. It should be described as a newspaper report, rather than as an announcement by HBO.

Is Aegon’s Conquest the confirmed story?

TheWrap reported in April 2026 that Warner Bros. shared Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest as a working title at CinemaCon. That title points toward a subject associated with Westeros lore, but a working title alone is not a confirmed plot synopsis. The cited reporting does not establish the film’s story details or confirm that it will adapt a particular book.

Bloys explained the 2024 development process this way: “That’s the point of development: you see, is there a story that’s worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle?” The remark is useful context for why early development does not guarantee production.

When will the movie come out?

No release date is established in the cited reports. They do not announce a production schedule or a theatrical release window. Likewise, they do not establish a cast, director, or completed production.

Will it stream on HBO Max?

Warner Bros. Discovery describes HBO Max as a destination for HBO Originals and Warner Bros. films in its 2025 annual filing. That general description does not announce where this particular film will be released or streamed. No streaming destination for the movie is confirmed by the reporting cited here.

How does the movie relate to George R. R. Martin’s books?

A Game of Thrones, the first novel in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, belongs to the same fictional world, but the available reporting does not identify it as the movie’s direct source text. Readers can turn to the novel for the original series; it should not be presented as a confirmed adaptation of this film.

What the franchise audience figures do—and do not—tell us

Warner Bros. Discovery said in its February 2026 shareholder letter that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was averaging more than 24 million viewers per episode globally. That is a company-reported figure for that series, not a measure of demand for the movie and not a forecast of its audience.
