The Jon Snow spin-off has not been confirmed as cancelled forever, but it is currently shelved. Kit Harington has said the team could not find a story that felt worth making, and he backed away rather than risk turning the idea into a poor series. His 2026 comments leave open the possibility of a version that works; they do not confirm that HBO has restarted development.
What is the roadblock?
It is creative, not a reported production or scheduling problem. Harington said the people discussing the continuation could not find an idea that excited them enough to move ahead. He explained that he withdrew because continuing to develop it might lead to a series “that’s not good”—an outcome he and the others wanted to avoid. Those are Harington’s comments about the discussions, not a published HBO explanation or an official cancellation notice.
In a 2026 interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington said he still believed “there’s a world in which something could work.” He also recalled that he, HBO and George R. R. Martin had agreed not to proceed unless they found the right idea. After reflecting on it, he felt it was not the right time.
Is the Jon Snow spin-off still happening?
There is no confirmed restart in the available reporting. A 2026 status roundup describes the project as shelved indefinitely, while Harington’s comments express conditional openness to a future idea—not a green light, filming plan or production order. The careful answer is that the project is shelved, with its long-term fate unresolved.

How the project went from development to shelving
2022: Development under the working title Snow
On June 23, 2022, Martin confirmed on Not a Blog that the working title was Snow. He said Harington had brought the idea to the team and brought in collaborators. Martin described the project as being in the script stage and said it had not received a green light. That was early development, not an order to produce or film a series.
2024: Harington says it is off the table
In April 2024, Harington told the Associated Press that there were “no plans for it at the moment” and that it was “off the table for the foreseeable.” In August, he elaborated that after years of conversations the group had not found a compelling enough idea. He said he backed out because pushing development further could result in a series that was not good.

2026: A possible future, not a revival
Harington’s 2026 remarks soften the sense of finality but do not change the reported production status. He said a version might work if the right idea emerged, while also saying he had concluded the timing and idea were not right then. A hypothetical opening is not evidence that HBO has resumed development.

- Known: Martin said the working title was Snow, Harington originated the idea, and the project had not been greenlit as of June 2022.
- Known: Harington publicly described the project as off the table in 2024 and later explained that the group had not found a story worth pursuing.
- Not established: A settled premise, filming date, budget, production schedule, or HBO order restarting the project.
- Not established: Permanent cancellation. Harington’s comments leave open the possibility of a future version, but only conditionally.
The distinction matters: “shelved” describes the current state reported for the project; “cancelled forever” goes beyond what Harington’s latest comments establish. And while Harington has expressed interest in the possibility of getting the story right, that is not the same as a show being back in production.
