Marriage and an evolving family
Union and Wade married in 2014, according to The Atlantic’s April 2025 profile. That year, Wade was also awarded full custody of his nephew Dahveon. The couple welcomed Kaavia in 2018. Union also became a bonus parent to Zaire and Zaya, while Xavier was primarily raised by his mother.
The first meeting was difficult
In a July 2025 account of Wade’s appearance on Today with Jenna and Friends, theGrio reported that Wade found introducing his children to Union difficult. He said he was unsure about the right timing and wording, called the first meeting “a little rough,” and also described the family as having grown with one another. The remark describes an early adjustment, not a lasting state of conflict.

What Wade and Union have said about supporting Zaya
In a 2020 first-person essay for TIME, Wade and Union wrote about learning from Zaya by listening, asking questions, and seeking guidance from health care professionals and advocates. They described trying to support their child as an individual and weighing the risks of social-media exposure against the desire to let her speak for herself. Their central lesson, in their words: “The biggest lesson we can offer is: listen to your child.”
In The Atlantic’s 2025 profile, Zaya offered her own advice to fathers: “it’s all about making sure your kids feel loved and they feel accepted and they’re protected and they’re safe.” These are the family’s reported reflections, rather than a substitute for individual professional guidance.

How old are the children?
Ages depend on the date of the report. TheGrio’s July 10, 2025 story listed Zaire as 23, Zaya as 18, Xavier as 11, Dahveon as 21, and Kaavia as 6. Those are publication-date snapshots, not current ages; no ages are given here as of October 2026.
