Seven actors have played M if you count both the official Eon series and the independent Bond films: Bernard Lee, Robert Brown, Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, John Huston, David Niven and Edward Fox. Eon’s main series has had four Ms; the other three portrayals come from the 1967 Casino Royale and 1983’s Never Say Never Again. This ranking weighs characterization, authority, chemistry with Bond and narrative impact—not simply the number of films.

How this ranking works

M is usually the person who turns a Bond briefing into a test of authority, trust or temperament. The recurring Eon performances offer more room for comparison than the independent films, whose versions vary sharply in tone and role size. The order below is an editorial judgment, not an official or sourced consensus.

  1. Characterization and authority: Does the actor make the head of MI6 feel distinct and credible?
  2. Chemistry with Bond: Does the relationship reveal something memorable about either character?
  3. Narrative impact: Does M shape the conflict or emotional stakes, rather than simply deliver the assignment?
  4. Opportunity: How much screen time and story material does the portrayal provide? More appearances create a larger sample, not an automatic advantage.

All seven actors who played M, ranked

1. Judi Dench

Dench gives M an unmistakable combination of command and impatience, and her friction with Bond makes the job feel personal as well as institutional. The relationship develops across eight films, from GoldenEye (1995) through Spectre (2015), giving her portrayal the broadest arc: she can be Bond’s superior, critic and uneasy ally. Her performance carries particular narrative weight in Skyfall (2012), where the pressure on M is central to the story. The 007 Magazine fact file marks her Spectre appearance uncredited.

2. Bernard Lee

Lee established the role’s familiar Eon-era shape: a senior official whose clipped authority makes Bond’s irreverence register. He played M in eleven films, from Dr. No (1962) to Moonraker (1979), according to the 007 Magazine fact file, whose publication date is not stated. That long run gives his restrained, steady performance a substantial screen sample and makes his M the benchmark against which later versions can be felt. His authority is less openly combative than Dench’s, but it is a crucial part of the early films’ tone.

3. Ralph Fiennes

Fiennes first appears in Skyfall (2012) as Gareth Mallory, a government official scrutinizing M’s leadership; he becomes M in Spectre (2015) and returns in No Time to Die (2021). That transition gives the role a useful change of perspective: Mallory begins as a check on the institution and later inherits its burdens. Fiennes brings a more composed, formal authority to M, and the earlier Mallory role makes his succession more than a simple change of actor.

4. Robert Brown

Brown’s M, seen in Octopussy (1983), A View to a Kill (1985), The Living Daylights (1987) and Licence to Kill (1989), is a dependable presence in a period of changing Bonds and shifting series styles. His understated approach suits a figure who generally supports the mission rather than becoming its emotional center. Brown had also played Admiral Hargreaves in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), a separate role; the film credits establish both parts but do not settle whether his M is meant to be the same in-story person as Lee’s.

5. Edward Fox

Fox plays M in Never Say Never Again (1983), an independent Bond film outside the Eon series. His version brings the role into a different production and story context, so the comparison with the recurring Eon Ms is necessarily limited. He has less room to develop a long-running relationship with Bond, but his presence gives the film its own take on the authority behind the mission.

6. John Huston

Huston plays M, named McTarry, in the independent Casino Royale (1967). The film is a deliberately comic, unconventional Bond story, which makes this version of the office a poor match for the more restrained or dramatic Eon portrayals. Huston’s place here reflects the distinctiveness of that context, not a lack of authority in the role: the performance is part of a broad parody rather than a sustained portrait of MI6 leadership.

7. David Niven

Niven’s M is the most unusual entry: in the 1967 Casino Royale, he plays Bond, who becomes M during the story. That switch makes the character a comic conceit rather than a conventional, separate performance by an actor serving as Bond’s boss. It is an essential part of a complete seven-actor count, but the film’s playful premise leaves less basis for comparing Niven’s M directly with the recurring versions.

Why the count is seven, not four

The answer depends on what you mean by “the James Bond movies.” Eon’s series has four performers in the M role: Lee, Brown, Dench and Fiennes. Counting the independent productions adds Huston and Niven in the 1967 Casino Royale and Fox in Never Say Never Again. The 1967 film is especially unconventional because Niven plays Bond before becoming M within the story.
