An FBI-released file includes an undated handwritten letter from Gabby Petito to Brian Laundrie, according to CBS News. The report says the letter refers to a fight and stress Laundrie was experiencing; its quoted passages ask him to stop calling her names and express affection and support. The letter is part of a public investigative record, but it does not establish the full nature of the relationship or explain what happened later.
What the letter says
In its June 11, 2024 report, CBS News described the letter as handwritten and undated. CBS said it references a fight between Petito and Laundrie, as well as stressors Laundrie was dealing with.
CBS reproduced this passage: “You know how much I love you, so (and I’m writing this with love) just please stop crying and stop calling me names because we’re a team and I’m here with you,” Petito wrote, in part. The report also quoted the line, “I’m always going to have your back.” These are excerpts, not a complete transcription of the letter.
Where to find the FBI record
The FBI Vault lists the release as “Brian Laundrie Part 01” and provides a PDF download. CBS reported that the letter was among more than 300 pages of records related to the investigation; that page count is CBS’s description of the records.
The Vault is the FBI’s electronic FOIA Library. The Bureau describes it as containing nearly 7,000 documents and other media; the page does not state when that figure was current. The FBI file is the place to inspect the released record itself, while CBS’s article summarizes and quotes selected portions.

The letter conveys care and frustration in the passages CBS published. On its own, it cannot establish the complete circumstances of the relationship, the timing of the exchange, or an explanation for later events. CBS said the letter is undated, so its precise place in the couple’s timeline is not established here. The reported excerpts also should not be treated as a full transcription or as independent handwriting authentication.

Separately, the FBI’s January 21, 2022 final investigative update said investigators did not identify anyone besides Laundrie as directly involved in Petito’s death. It also said investigators found a notebook containing written statements by Laundrie claiming responsibility for her death. FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider said, “All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case.” Those are findings and statements from the investigation; they are distinct from what Petito’s letter says.
