Fyre Festival 2 did not begin on its advertised May 30, 2025 date in Playa del Carmen. Ticket holders were told in April that the event was postponed, with no replacement date or destination announced. Organizers said they were looking at other locations, but local authorities publicly disputed the organizers’ account of government support. The latest substantiated follow-up cited here is dated April 24, 2025; it does not establish a later event date or a completed sale of the Fyre brand.
What happened to Fyre Festival 2?
In February 2025, Fyre Festival 2 was promoted as a Mexico event scheduled for May 30 to June 2. Isla Mujeres was initially promoted as its destination; organizers later said they had moved the planned location to Playa del Carmen. On April 16–17, ticket holders received postponement and refund messages. Festival spokesperson Nick Lawson confirmed to The Washington Post that the festival would not start in Playa del Carmen on May 30.
Lawson said, “FYRE Festival 2 is still on,” and that organizers were vetting other locations. That statement did not provide a new date or host destination. The planned May event therefore did not proceed as advertised; the claim that it would happen elsewhere was an organizer statement, not confirmation of a rescheduled festival.
Why was it postponed, and what did authorities say?
The organizers’ April 16 notice, reported by The Guardian, said they had received government documentation in December 2024 and secured venues, hotels, and permits. It blamed a change in the local government’s position and said the event would move elsewhere. Those are the organizers’ claims; the notice does not independently establish that permits or official support had been secured.

Public comments by local authorities contradicted that account:
- Quintana Roo tourism secretary Bernardo Cueto told ABC News that his agency had not been informed and that no event by that name was happening in Isla Mujeres or Playa del Carmen.
- Edgar Gasca, a representative of the Isla Mujeres tourism directorate, told The Guardian, “We have no knowledge of this event, nor contact with any person or company about it. For us, this is an event that does not exist.”
- ABC News reproduced a Playa del Carmen municipal statement: “The municipal government of Playa del Carmen, informs that no event with that name will be held in our city.”
The accounts should not be collapsed into a single confirmed explanation: organizers said a change in the local government’s position forced a move, while state and municipal representatives said they had not been informed or that no such event would take place. The cited reporting does not independently resolve that dispute.
Did Fyre Festival 2 get a new date or location?
No replacement date or destination was named in the postponement statements. On April 24, 2025, the Los Angeles Times reported that the event had been indefinitely postponed without a host location. The sources cited here establish no later confirmed date, venue, or completed brand sale, so they cannot verify whether the project’s status changed after that report.
What did the postponement mean for ticket holders?
The ticket-holder notice described refunds on request and said tickets kept by customers would be honored at a new location. The cited reports do not confirm that those terms remain available today. Anyone who bought a ticket should check the original notice and contact the seller or payment provider directly about the current status of a refund; the notice is not proof that a refund can still be obtained.

The Los Angeles Times reported on April 24, 2025, that McFarland was stepping back and putting the Fyre brand up for sale. In a statement reported by the paper, he said, “This brand is bigger than any one person and bigger than what I’m able to lead on my own.” The report establishes that he said he planned to sell the brand, not that a sale closed.
For background, The Washington Post reported that McFarland defrauded investors of $26 million in connection with the first Fyre Festival and received a six-year prison sentence. The paper also described Fyre Festival 2 ticket packages advertised from $1,400 to $1.1 million. The Guardian separately reported luxury offers up to $25,000 and a $1 million package. These were advertised prices, not verified ticket sales. The sources cited here do not establish attendance, sales totals, or festival performance figures for Fyre Festival 2.
