It narrowly topped the estimated 2024 Memorial Day four-day domestic chart, but its opening was modest and its theatrical total was low relative to that budget. Those figures show a theatrical underperformance—not, by themselves, how much money the film ultimately made or lost.
How much did Furiosa make at the box office?
The Numbers lists Furiosa at $174,487,546 worldwide, including $67,587,546 domestically. Box Office Mojo lists $174,375,791 worldwide, with $67,475,791 domestic and $106.9 million international. The trackers differ by $111,755, a small discrepancy that does not change the overall picture.
The Numbers also records a $168 million production-budget listing, a May 24, 2024 domestic opening, and a release in 3,804 theaters. Its domestic total represents 38.7% of its worldwide gross. The simple worldwide-gross-to-budget ratio is about 1.04 to 1, but ticket sales are not the same as money returned to a studio.
Did Furiosa beat The Garfield Movie on Memorial Day?
Yes, narrowly, according to the Associated Press’s estimates for the four-day holiday frame in 2024: Furiosa was estimated at $32 million, compared with $31.1 million for The Garfield Movie. That was a slim chart win, not evidence of a strong debut. AP reported that Furiosa had been expected to open somewhat higher and described the broader Memorial Day weekend as one of the weakest in decades, excluding the 2020 theater shutdown.

Opening-period numbers vary with the dates and estimates being reported. Variety’s contemporaneous report put the Friday-to-Sunday domestic debut at an estimated $25.6 million and the four-day domestic total at an estimated $31 million, alongside $33.3 million from 75 international territories for an early worldwide tally of $58.9 million. Those were opening-period estimates, not final totals.
What happened after opening weekend?
The domestic run dropped quickly. The Numbers records $26.3 million for the first weekend, $10.8 million in the second—a 59% decline—and $4.2 million in the third, down a further 61%. Its final domestic total was about $67.6 million.

The steep early declines and comparatively low final total help explain why the film struggled theatrically despite taking first place over the holiday. A weekend ranking says where a film stood against that weekend’s competitors; it does not say whether the opening was large enough to support the film’s costs.
Did Furiosa lose money?
The box-office figures do not establish a specific final loss. The reported $168 million figure is a production budget, while the roughly $174.4 million worldwide figure is gross ticket sales. Studios do not receive every dollar spent at the box office, and the cited budget does not include a complete accounting of marketing, distribution, or other costs. The available figures therefore support saying that Furiosa underperformed relative to its production budget, not assigning it a definitive net loss.

There is also a separate Australian production-cost figure to keep distinct: ABC News Australia reported A$333.2 million in Australian production spending. That amount is in Australian dollars and describes production spending in an Australian context; the sources do not reconcile its accounting basis with The Numbers’ US$168 million budget listing. They should not be treated as directly interchangeable figures.
How did it compare with Fury Road?
Variety reported that Mad Max: Fury Road opened domestically to $45 million and grossed $380 million worldwide. Against those nominal historical figures, Furiosa opened lower and finished far below its predecessor worldwide. This is a useful franchise comparison, but it does not isolate a cause: release timing, audience conditions, marketing, ticket prices, and differences between the films all matter.

Why might the prequel have struggled?
There is no independently verified statistic in the cited coverage that identifies why audiences did or did not attend. Variety’s opening-week analysis offered possible explanations, including the difficulty prequels can face, the recasting of Furiosa as a younger character, and the absence of Fury Road’s leads as the stars. It also suggested that the franchise might have a more concentrated cinephile audience than broad mainstream reach. These are informed interpretations, not a demonstrated single cause.
Variety quoted Shawn Robbins, founder of Box Office Theory, saying, “It reaffirms that prequels with recast characters are tough sells to casual audiences.” It also quoted David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research calling it “a weak opening in spite of outstanding reviews and a good audience score.” Those comments capture analysts’ contemporary assessments; they do not prove that recasting, reviews, or audience scores caused the box-office result.

What do the box-office numbers actually prove?
- The theatrical run was weak relative to the listed production budget. The worldwide gross was only slightly higher than that budget in simple arithmetic, before accounting for how ticket revenue is divided or for costs outside production.
- The holiday chart win was narrow. The estimated four-day lead over The Garfield Movie did not amount to a breakout opening.
- Two tracking services give close, not identical, final totals. The Numbers and Box Office Mojo differ by $111,755 worldwide.
- The figures do not reveal a final profit or loss. They are not a complete studio accounting.
- Explanations for the audience response remain hypotheses. The cited reports do not establish one definitive reason.
