That distinction matters because the conversation is tied to the children who were wronged by their loved ones, their hope gathering around the root symbol, and the symbol’s connection to the faraway tree mystery. The recollection adds context to those clues; it does not, by itself, explain every part of the town’s history.
Was Jasper or the Boy in White talking to Christopher?
According to episode recap reporting, it was the Boy in White. Jasper is the ventriloquist doll associated with Victor’s memory, but Victor’s breakthrough is that the figure speaking to Christopher was the Boy in White, not the doll.

Is the matching TechYorker recap reliable?
The TechYorker page with a matching title includes claims about a clandestine experiment, a secret society and memory manipulation that are not supported by the episode listings or the more specific recap coverage. Its descriptions of the memory reveal also conflict with one another. For the Christopher scene, the more specific recap accounts identify the Boy in White as the one speaking, rather than Jasper.
