Its website and streaming apps ended service on April 2, 2024, with Sony consolidating the business under Crunchyroll. The Nintendo Switch app was discontinued that day as well. Crunchyroll is the direct successor for streaming, but the transition did not preserve every account feature, title, or Funimation Digital Copy.
Why Funimation closed
Sony completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll through Funimation Global Group on August 9, 2021. In March 2022, Crunchyroll announced that Funimation, Wakanim, and VRV content and services would be unified under the Crunchyroll brand. The business objective was one anime subscription service instead of separate Funimation and Crunchyroll platforms.

The migration started before Funimation disappeared. Sony and Crunchyroll said the initial rollout added more than 1,600 hours of programming and 50 newly available titles, but that announcement did not promise that every Funimation title, season, dub, subtitle track, or regional license would remain available permanently.

What happened to Funimation subscribers?
Many Funimation subscriptions were transferred to Crunchyroll, and former users could generally try the credentials associated with their Funimation account on Crunchyroll. The exact result depended on the country, subscription type, payment provider, and account history.

Check the Crunchyroll account first
- Sign in at Crunchyroll using the email and password associated with Funimation.
- Open account settings and verify the active plan, renewal date, email address, and payment method.
- If the account does not appear, use Crunchyroll’s support process rather than attempting to reactivate Funimation.
Review third-party billing
Subscriptions billed through Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, or another intermediary may require action in that intermediary’s account. Check bank and app-store statements for duplicate recurring charges. Roku Pay subscribers were moved under Crunchyroll’s Fan plan in the applicable support guidance.
Legacy plans were not identical everywhere. Some customers moved to current Crunchyroll plans or prices, while annual members may have been eligible to ask Crunchyroll about a refund for the unused premium period, subject to the payment method and circumstances. The official service notice is the best source for an individual account: Crunchyroll’s Funimation end-of-services guidance.

Watch history and queue migration
Crunchyroll’s current support page says watch-history migration is no longer available. Some people who migrated or used their accounts during the transition may see different results from users trying after the shutdown. Do not assume that a Funimation queue or viewing history can still be imported.
Former Funimation credentials may continue to work for some people who previously used them to access Crunchyroll. Crunchyroll has also indicated that this access may eventually be discontinued for users who never used that sign-in method.

The major exception: Funimation Digital Copies
Streaming migration and digital ownership were separate issues. Crunchyroll says it does not currently support Funimation Digital Copies. Digital copies linked to eligible Funimation DVD or Blu-ray purchases therefore were not made available through Crunchyroll after the shutdown.
A show appearing in Crunchyroll’s streaming catalog does not restore a personal Funimation Digital Copy entitlement. This is a service-policy statement, not a broader legal ruling about ownership; readers with a specific purchase dispute should retain receipts and contact the relevant seller or support channel.

Did the whole Funimation catalog move?
No blanket guarantee covers the entire catalog. Crunchyroll’s announcements support saying that most content migrated over time, not that every title and version transferred everywhere. Anime licenses are territorial and can change.
- A series may be available in one country but not another.
- One season may be present while a later season is absent.
- Subtitles may be available without a particular dub, or vice versa.
- Streaming, uncut, home-video, and broadcast versions can differ.
Search for the exact show on Crunchyroll and inspect its season, audio, subtitle, and version options. Funimation’s former availability is not proof of current Crunchyroll availability.

What happened to Funimation’s dubs?
Bringing Funimation’s dubbed and subtitled anime into one service was part of the stated consolidation rationale. That does not mean every Funimation-era dub, uncut edit, or subtitle track is present on every Crunchyroll listing. Territory and licensing determine what appears on an individual show page.
Current U.S. Crunchyroll plans
The following prices and features are from Crunchyroll’s U.S. Premium page checked in 2026. Taxes, promotions, eligibility, billing platform, and regional pricing can change the amount.
| Plan | Monthly price | Notable features |
|---|---|---|
| Fan | $9.99 | Ad-free library, one simultaneous stream, and offline viewing. |
| Mega Fan | $13.99 | Four simultaneous streams, offline viewing, Game Vault, and additional store benefits. |
| Ultimate Fan | $17.99 | Six simultaneous streams, offline viewing, Game Vault, Crunchyroll Manga, enhanced store benefits, and annual swag-bag eligibility. |
Crunchyroll announced these U.S. price increases in February 2026; for existing monthly subscribers, the new amount applied at the next billing date after March 4, 2026. The official plan page advertises a seven-day trial for eligible new subscribers, with automatic renewal unless canceled: Crunchyroll Premium.
Which option fits a former Funimation viewer?
- Fan: suitable for one viewer seeking the core ad-free streaming library.
- Mega Fan: better for households needing multiple simultaneous streams or offline viewing.
- Ultimate Fan: intended for viewers who specifically value six streams, Crunchyroll Manga, and the additional membership perks.
None of these plans restores Funimation Digital Copies, and none guarantees that every former Funimation title or version is licensed on Crunchyroll.

- Sign in to Crunchyroll with the former Funimation credentials.
- Confirm the plan, renewal date, and payment method in account settings.
- Check Apple, Google Play, Roku, Amazon, or another billing intermediary for a separate subscription.
- Search Crunchyroll for each important series and verify seasons, dubs, subtitles, and territory availability.
- Contact Crunchyroll support about sign-in problems, duplicate charges, plan transfers, or annual-plan refunds.
- Do not rely on Crunchyroll to recover Funimation Digital Copies or to import watch history after migration has closed.
Bottom line
Funimation did not merely enter another transition period: it shut down on April 2, 2024. Crunchyroll is the successor streaming service, but the merger preserved streaming access only on the terms of the new platform. Account treatment varied, watch-history migration is no longer available, catalog and dub availability remain title- and region-specific, and Funimation Digital Copies are not currently supported.
