A July 2023 report on the fictional influencer Milla Sofia described suggestive posts with thousands of likes and hundreds of comments. That is a documented example—not proof that AI influencers generally get high engagement, that every reaction came from a real person, or that the account earned money.
What the 2023 headline actually describes
Victor Tangermann’s Futurism report, updated July 19, 2023, focused on Milla Sofia, presented as a 19-year-old virtual woman from Helsinki, Finland. The article described her as having Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok accounts, with polished, scantily clad portraits that received thousands of likes and hundreds of comments—sometimes tens of thousands of likes.
The account’s Instagram bio disclosed, “I’m an AI creation.” That disclosure coexisted with a fictional lifestyle persona: the images placed her in settings such as beaches and travel destinations. The article’s descriptions of smooth skin and recurring visual motifs were observations about the accounts it discussed, not results from a platform-wide study.
Tangermann said Milla Sofia’s creator did not respond to a request for comment. The report therefore did not establish who made the persona, exactly how the images were produced, whether the visible engagement was authentic, or whether it produced revenue. The headline’s “thousands” refers to reactions reported for particular posts, not a measured average across AI influencer accounts.

What a later campaign comparison found
A 2024 CreatorIQ report compared five examples of AI-influencer brand content or campaign collaborations involving global brands from May 2023 through April 2024. Its table for Aitana López included six brand comparisons. CreatorIQ defines engagement rate as the percentage of followers who liked, commented on, or shared a post.

The comparisons are mixed: Aitana was above the listed community average in three examples and below it in three. CreatorIQ also observed that more revealing posts coincided with higher engagement for some featured brands, while more fully dressed campaign posts for others had lower rates than those brands’ creator communities. That is an interpretation of a small set of campaign examples, not evidence that revealing content caused higher engagement. The report’s defined campaign window and handful of creators do not establish a current, general performance benchmark.

Why reaction counts need context
A public like count is not the same thing as an engagement rate, and neither one answers every question about an audience. Raw counts are difficult to compare across accounts of different sizes. A rate adds a denominator, but its meaning still depends on what actions were counted, the post type, whether it was organic or sponsored, and how the account’s audience was measured.
- Visible reactions do not verify the audience. A count alone cannot establish whether reactions came from verified people or whether viewers knew the persona was AI-generated.
- A campaign is not an ordinary post. Brand content and organic content have different contexts, so campaign figures should not be treated as interchangeable with a persona’s everyday performance.
- Publication dates matter. Milla Sofia’s reported post reactions are from a 2023 article; the Aitana comparisons cover May 2023–April 2024. Neither is a live measure of performance today.
- Disclosure is a separate question from appearance. Milla Sofia’s bio disclosed her AI nature, but a fictional lifestyle presentation can still leave viewers with questions about how a particular image or account was made.
A newer-looking metrics page is still a studio’s claim
Skinita Studio’s page for Mikaela Tala identifies her as an AI-generated digital influencer and publishes figures it describes as last-30-day platform metrics verified through third-party analytics. The page lists 1.5 million Facebook followers, 264,000 TikTok followers, and 183,000 Instagram followers; it also reports average reactions per Facebook post of 23,000, average TikTok likes of 22,000, and average Instagram likes of 2,076.

They should not be used as a neutral industry benchmark or compared directly with Milla Sofia’s 2023 post reactions without matching the platform, measurement period, account size, and metric.

Do AI influencers make money from the attention?
The Futurism article raised monetization as an open question for Milla Sofia; it did not document her revenue. A later Fast Company report in 2026 described Aitana López as having brand deals and said fans pay to message her through Fanvue. That is a reported example of sponsorship and paid interaction, not evidence of typical earnings, comparable income for other AI personas, or universal eligibility for a platform program.
Fast Company also quoted Diana Núñez, CEO and cofounder of The Clueless, saying, “The most important thing for Aitana is that she has a backstory.” Núñez also said, “We can make a whole month of content in one morning.” Those comments illustrate how an operator may approach character design and content production; they do not show how much the account earns or whether a particular AI persona can reproduce the same results.

Platform reach tools do not prove an AI advantage
In a June 12, 2025 announcement, Meta described Trial Reels, which initially show a Reel to non-followers. Meta said its internal analysis covered more than 400,000 creators who used the feature: 40% posted Reels more often after trying it, and among those who posted more often, 80% saw increased reach from non-followers. Meta cautioned, “This is designed to highlight possible performance, but performance is not guaranteed.” These are company-reported results about creators using a feature, not evidence that AI personas receive preferential reach.

AI-generated personas have attracted substantial visible engagement in specific reported cases, and some have appeared in brand campaigns or paid fan interactions. The examples do not show that high reaction counts are typical, that engagement is necessarily authentic, or that a large audience reliably translates into income. The strongest conclusion is also the most bounded: these accounts can command attention, but each performance claim needs its own platform, date, denominator, content context, and source.
