The Elric brothers’ attempt at human transmutation shows the rule’s frightening stakes—but it is a rule of the series’ fictional alchemy, not a promise that real life always balances effort and loss.
What is the Law of Equivalent Exchange?
The official Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood introduction defines alchemy as “the science of understanding, decomposing, and reconstructing matter by the rules of equivalent exchange.” Read the official series introduction.

In plain terms, an alchemist must understand the material being changed and work with what the transformation requires. Alchemy is not an unlimited power to make anything appear from nothing. The definition also makes clear that the process involves more than swapping one object for another: understanding, decomposition and reconstruction are all part of it.
What happened when the Elric brothers tried human transmutation?
After their mother died, Edward and Alphonse attempted human transmutation, which the series identifies as a taboo. The attempt failed and cost both brothers dearly. The official character profiles state that Edward lost his left leg in the attempt. He then lost his right arm while transmuting Alphonse’s soul back into the world. Alphonse lost his body, and Edward bound his brother’s soul to a suit of armor.
#1 Best Overall
Their story makes equivalent exchange feel consequential: alchemy is not consequence-free, and forbidden attempts can end in devastating loss. The official summaries establish the taboo and the brothers’ injuries, but do not give a full account of every metaphysical mechanism behind the event. The losses are clear; a more detailed explanation of how the attempt is accounted for would go beyond what these sources establish.
Does equivalent exchange mean everything has an equal price?
Within the story, equivalent exchange is the rule governing alchemy. It should not be treated as proof that every real-world effort earns a matching reward, or that suffering is always repaid with something of equal value. That broader claim is a possible philosophical interpretation of the series, not a guarantee made by its alchemy definition.
