Eva Erickson’s life spans two very different arenas: competitive hockey and engineering research into how seal whiskers sense motion underwater. She also competed on Survivor 48, finishing as the season’s runner-up, according to Brown University.
What does Eva Erickson study about seals?
Erickson’s thesis research investigates how seals use their whiskers to detect objects or disturbances in water, and whether that sensing mechanism could inform technology. In a February 2025 interview with Parade, she described the project as research into “how seals use their whiskers to locate objects in water” and how it might be implemented in sensing technology for the Navy.
She does not conduct her experiments with live seals. Instead, Erickson studies a scaled-up whisker model in a water flume, observing how it vibrates in response to disturbances. Brown University reported in 2025 that the flume has a capacity of 2,000 gallons. That figure describes the apparatus, not a research result or a measure of sensing performance.
How is hockey part of her life?
Hockey is not simply a contrast to Erickson’s academic work; it is a long-running commitment. “I’ve played hockey my whole life,” she told Parade. Brown says she played on men’s club teams, captained Brown’s club hockey team, and officiates hockey. These are distinct roles: she has participated as a player and team captain, as well as working as an official.

Brown’s profile places her hockey leadership alongside her appearance on Survivor, describing her as “captaining the men’s club hockey team” and as the show’s first openly autistic cast member. That is the university’s framing; Erickson’s own interview is the source for her account of her team experiences and choices on the show.
What did Erickson say about playing Survivor?
In her Parade interview, Erickson discussed how she chose to present herself on Survivor. Her account offers a first-person perspective on her approach; it does not establish what other contestants thought or why they made particular decisions. Brown identifies her as the runner-up on Survivor 48.

Why do the hockey and research strands belong together?
They show different parts of Erickson’s public life without needing to explain one through the other. Hockey involves competition, team participation, and officiating; her engineering work is experimental research using a physical model to examine a sensing mechanism. Brown’s School of Engineering has also described her interest in bringing sports and engineering together, including the possibility of applying engineering to sports equipment.
The seal research is biomimetic model testing, not field observation of live seals. The hockey experience is documented through her playing, captaincy, and officiating. Together, those details offer a fuller picture of a castaway whose interests extend well beyond the television competition.
