Watch spotters identify Chris Hemsworth’s watch in Extraction as the green Casio G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-3, and Bradley Cooper’s watch in American Sniper as a G-Shock DW-6600-1V. Those screen identifications are specialist reporting, not official prop confirmations. G-Shock’s rugged reputation has a more concrete basis in Casio’s shock-protection design and in specific models’ documented features—but a film scene is not a durability test, and military-style styling is not military endorsement.
What G-Shock does Chris Hemsworth wear in Extraction?
Watch-identification specialists report that Hemsworth’s character wears a green G-Shock Rangeman GW-9400-3. G-Central describes the watch as an apparent GW-9400 Rangeman and says it appears to be the green GW-9400-3 after reviewing the film. Watch ID also identifies it as the GW-9400-3 Rangeman. Neither source is an official confirmation from the film’s prop department or Casio.
The exact reference matters if you are looking for the on-screen color. Casio’s official specifications surfaced for the GW-9400-1, not the green GW-9400-3, so those specifications should not be treated as confirmation of every detail of the -3 variant. Check the official listing for the precise reference and region before buying.
What watch does Bradley Cooper wear in American Sniper?
Watch ID identifies Cooper’s watch in the film as a Casio G-Shock DW-6600-1V. This is a reported screen identification, not an official production record. The DW-6600 is a historical reference and is not the same watch as the Rangeman GW-9400; current resale availability and condition are not established here.

What Chris Kyle wrote about wearing a G-Shock
Separately from the film identification, Chris Kyle wrote in his memoir that he wore a G-Shock. He described its black watch and rubber wristband as having replaced Rolex Submariners as standard SEAL equipment. That is Kyle’s statement in his memoir, not independent evidence of a formal military procurement policy or equipment standard. The memoir provides context for the watch’s association with his story, but it does not establish that the film’s specific DW-6600-1V was his personal watch.
What makes G-Shock watches rugged?
Casio’s explanation centers on physical protection, not just an imposing appearance. Its shock-resistance description says the protruding bezel encloses the watch and helps absorb impacts, protecting the buttons and module; the design also protects internal components. This is the practical foundation behind the brand’s tough image.

Features vary by reference. Casio’s official GW-9400-1 specification page lists shock resistance, water resistance to 200 meters, Tough Solar power, Multi-Band 6 timekeeping, and triple sensors. The sensors provide altitude, barometric pressure, compass direction, and temperature readings. These are specifications for the GW-9400-1 page, not a blanket feature list for every G-Shock or proof that every regional or color variant is identical.
What does Casio’s military-standard testing claim mean?
Casio’s MIL-STD-810 collection page says five named models underwent selected procedures defined by the U.S. Department of Defense standard in a program conducted by Element. The described procedures cover simulated environmental and mechanical conditions, including salt fog, humidity, freeze/thaw, immersion, vibration, mechanical shock, and blowing dust.

- Quartz Movement
- Case Diameter: 52.8mm
- Water resistant 200m (660ft): in general, suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports, but not diving
The scope is specific: those named models and those selected procedures. Casio also says the watches are not specifically endorsed by any branch of the military. Testing against selected procedures is not the same as military adoption, endorsement, or proof that every G-Shock has passed the same tests.
How should you choose between the screen watches?
If the appeal is the watch seen in Extraction, start with the GW-9400-3 reference and verify the exact color and listing. If you are interested in the American Sniper watch, look for the historical DW-6600-1V only where the model and condition are clearly identified. A newer watch may suit your needs, but it should be presented as an alternative—not as the same watch.

| Reference | Screen association | What is established here | Practical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| GW-9400-3 Rangeman | Extraction; reported for Hemsworth’s character | Two specialist identification sources report this reference; the official specification page surfaced here is for GW-9400-1. | Confirm exact color, regional variant, current availability, and official specifications for the -3. |
| DW-6600-1V | American Sniper; reported for Bradley Cooper’s character | One specialist identification source reports this reference; it is a historical model. | Check whether a listing is new, used, or vintage and assess its condition; current stock is not established. |
For either watch, compare the exact reference, case profile and display style, power source, timekeeping features, water resistance, and any sensors the official listing documents. Avoid relying on labels such as “military grade” when a model’s actual specifications and test scope are available.

A digital watch that looks purposeful on screen and has an impact-protection design makes a memorable combination. In a Casio Watch World interview, an interviewee identified as Nick praised the placement of a G-Shock on Hemsworth in Extraction, saying the watch goes through two hours of intense action and survives. That is Nick’s reaction to the film placement, not a test result: the on-screen watch’s survival is part of the story, not evidence from a controlled durability test.
