Offworld Industries says a community-made Starship Troopers-inspired mod for Squad gave the studio a way to experiment with cooperative horde play—and material for a pitch to Sony Pictures. The licensed game that followed was a separate project, built on lessons the team says it had learned through years of modding and developing Squad.
Project Reality gave Offworld its starting point
Offworld’s story begins with Project Reality, a Battlefield 2 mod made by developers who later formed the studio. The company describes Squad as the commercial game inspired by that earlier work. In an August 2024 interview with MobileSyrup, co-founder and head of R&D Alastair ‘Chuc’ Sew Hoy recalled a group of amateur modders who wanted to remake Battlefield according to their own vision.

That background gave the team experience with the tactical-shooter audience it hoped to serve. “We knew the tactical shooter market quite well by the time we started because of our previous experience working on Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2, and it allowed us to really drive straight to the core of the team play experience we wanted to deliver,” Sew Hoy said.
Offworld’s own history describes Squad as growing from a prototype, community-building and crowdfunding effort. That account places the community not just around the finished game, but among the forces that helped the project take shape.

A Squad mod became an experiment in co-op
The bridge from Squad to Starship Troopers: Extermination was an unofficial mod, not a studio release. Sew Hoy told MobileSyrup that a previous developer created a Starship Troopers-inspired mod for Squad and released it publicly. The team watched the response and used the work to test a larger question: could Squad’s framework support a cooperative horde shooter, rather than the kind of tactical player-versus-player experience for which it was known?
“Starship Troopers was another adventurous gamble in us trying to apply what we learned on Squad and apply it to a PvE-style horde shooter,” Sew Hoy said. The mod was therefore both a community creation and a practical experiment in adapting the studio’s experience to a different kind of game.
How the experiment led to a licensed game
Sew Hoy said Offworld assembled footage and ideas from the mod for pitch meetings with Sony Pictures. In May 2023, Offworld announced its collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products on Starship Troopers: Extermination. The chronology connects the mod to the pitch, but not as a direct conversion: the studio’s account is that the community project helped demonstrate and explore an idea that became a separate licensed game.
Offworld’s FAQ makes the distinction explicit: “Starship Troopers: Extermination is not a Squad mod.” The mod remains a separate community-developed work; Extermination is Offworld’s game made in collaboration with the rights holder’s consumer-products division.

What separates the mod, Squad and Extermination?
The projects differ in authorship, purpose and play style. Offworld’s FAQ describes Extermination as a 16-player cooperative PvE shooter and Squad as a 50-versus-50 PvP shooter. Those are the FAQ’s published descriptions, not a guarantee that every mode or game detail will remain unchanged.

Community remains part of Offworld’s stated approach
CEO Vlad Ceraldi summarized the company’s identity in the interview with a simple statement: “We are a community-driven company.” He said player communication and data about game activity inform future development. Those are the leadership’s descriptions of its approach, not an independent assessment of how well it works.
The path from Project Reality to Squad and then to Extermination shows one way that approach can intersect with development: a modding background informed the studio’s first commercial game; a new community mod gave the team a low-stakes way to explore another format; and the resulting idea helped support a pitch for a licensed project.
What the timeline does—and does not—establish
Offworld’s official history marks Extermination’s Early Access launch in 2023. Its May 2023 announcement named May 17 as the planned launch date and US$24.99 as the introductory Early Access price. Both are historical launch details, not current availability or pricing guidance.
The same 2023 announcement said Squad had sold “well over three million copies.” That is a company-reported figure from the announcement, not an independently audited current sales count. Likewise, MobileSyrup’s 2024 interview framed Offworld’s history as ten years old at that time; that was the interview’s framing, not a present-day age calculation.
