The digits 0–9 are commonly called Arabic numerals in Europe, but the decimal place-value system behind them originated in India. The name reflects the route by which the system reached Europe: scholars in the Arabic-speaking world developed and transmitted Indian mathematics, and the numeral forms changed as they traveled.
Why are they called Arabic numerals if their origins are Indian?
“Hindu-Arabic numerals” is a fuller name for the decimal digits and place-value notation familiar today. It recognizes both the system’s Indian origins and its subsequent history in the Arabic-speaking world. Calling them “Arabic numerals” in Europe reflects the channel through which Europeans encountered and adopted the system, rather than identifying where it first arose.

The symbols themselves did not travel unchanged. The history described by Deutsche Welle (DW) includes a variant called Ghubar, which the documentary synopsis glosses as “dust.” It associates that form with dust tables used by Maghrebi merchants around the Mediterranean and presents it as a source of the forms used in Europe today. That is the synopsis’s account of the numeral shapes, not a complete historical analysis of every stage of their development. DW’s documentary page
What makes the system different?
Place value makes position count
In decimal place-value notation, a digit’s value depends on where it appears. The same digit can represent units, tens, hundreds, or another power of ten, depending on its position. This lets a small set of symbols express many different quantities compactly. The system’s development was gradual, rather than a single invention of finished symbols and rules. Zero marks an empty place—and became a number
Zero has a practical role as a placeholder: it shows that a position in a written number is unoccupied. Without that marker, a written numeral could be ambiguous about which place a digit occupies. Its history also involves a deeper conceptual change. The Princeton Companion’s account describes zero in al-Khwarizmi’s writing as having a special placeholder role, while the treatment of zero as a number developed over time. The Princeton Companion to Mathematics
What was al-Khwarizmi’s role?
Al-Khwarizmi belongs to the story of mathematical scholarship and transmission, not to a claim that one person invented the Indian system. DW’s synopsis says that the eighth-century scholar helped spread Indian numerals from Baghdad. It also connects his Latinized name, Algorismi, with the word “algorithm.” These points situate his influence within a much wider history spanning regions and generations. DW’s documentary synopsis

How did the numerals reach Europe?
The broad outline is a passage from India into the Islamic world, followed by development and transmission toward Europe. A historical summary by Ekkehard Kopp describes the system’s Indian origins and later development in Arab caliphates, with numeral forms further developed by Arab mathematicians from the eighth century and eventually introduced to Spain and transmitted through Italy into medieval Europe. Because that source’s full page is not available here, exact dates and a definitive route should not be inferred from its summary alone. Ekkehard Kopp, Making up Numbers: A History of Invention in Mathematics
The names, methods, and symbol shapes therefore preserve different parts of the story: Indian origins, Arabic-speaking scholarship and transmission, and later European adoption and adaptation. The documentary frames these numerals as central to calculation and computing today; its historical account helps explain how a notation developed across cultures became familiar far beyond its places of origin.
