For this subjective ranking of the 12 feature films released from 1980 through 2009, Jason Lives takes the top spot for its brisk pace, dark humor, and confident use of Jason. The list weighs atmosphere, character work, set pieces, Jason’s screen presence, originality, and rewatchability—not box office or an alleged critical consensus. Fans who prefer straight slasher suspense, sci-fi camp, or crossover spectacle may rank the films differently.

How to use this ranking

The scope is the 12 franchise features listed by The Numbers, including the 2003 Freddy vs. Jason crossover and the 2009 self-titled reboot. The ranking is an editorial viewing guide, not an official or data-derived verdict. For a conventional first watch, release order is the simplest path: it follows the films’ release history and lets you see how the series changes its formula.

Paramount+’s guide, published October 10, 2024, also counts 12 films and lists the first eight, but its streaming information is dated and the page warns availability can change. Check a current service listing before subscribing to watch any particular entry. Paramount+’s guide is useful for its dated plot summaries, not as a guarantee of present-day access.

Friday the 13th movies ranked, worst to best

  1. 12. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)

This is the biggest structural detour in the series: instead of centering on the familiar camp-and-stalker pattern, it leans into supernatural body-hopping mechanics. That shift offers novelty, but it makes the film a harder fit for viewers who come for a sustained Jason-in-the-woods presence. It ranks last here because the unusual premise pulls attention away from the franchise’s most effective source of tension.

  2. 11. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

The New York trip sounds like a major change of scale, and the city setting gives the movie a distinct identity. But the journey to Manhattan takes time, so the title’s big-city promise is not the film’s constant setting. Paramount+’s dated guide describes the voyage to New York; the contrast between that setup and the limited time in the destination is the central trade-off for this entry.

  3. 10. Friday the 13th (2009)

The 2009 film is a self-titled reboot rather than another numbered chapter in the original release sequence. Its place near the bottom reflects this ranking’s preference for the original cycle’s gradual development of atmosphere and series identity. It can still work for someone who wants a standalone entry with a different feel from the earlier films, without needing to treat it as a continuation of their chronology.

  4. 9. Jason X (2002)

Moving the threat into science fiction makes this one of the franchise’s most conspicuous tonal experiments. That novelty is a plus if you want a campier change of scenery; it is a drawback if you want Crystal Lake unease and conventional slasher suspense. It lands low on a consistency-minded list, but viewers who value playful genre pivots have a good reason to move it up.

  5. 8. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

A camper with a dangerous secret gives Jason a different kind of opponent, shifting the conflict away from an ordinary group of counselors. That matchup is the film’s strongest point of distinction, and Paramount+’s guide flags the camper’s secret in its plot description. The concept gives the entry a hook, though it does not make it as balanced a blend of mood, momentum, and character as the higher-ranked installments.

  6. 7. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

This crossover is built around the appeal of seeing two horror icons share a story, not around the more contained suspense of a solo Jason film. That spectacle makes it an easy pick when the goal is a franchise event or a change of pace, but the competing personalities and mythology create a different rhythm from a focused camp slasher. Its crossover status is why it belongs in a broad franchise ranking, even if it is not the clearest introduction to Jason’s solo films.

  7. 6. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)

Set at a halfway house, this chapter puts mystery and identity questions closer to the foreground than the straightforward stalk-and-survive pattern many viewers expect. The premise makes it a more divisive watch, but also gives it a distinct place in the series rather than simply repeating an earlier setup. It works best for viewers willing to let uncertainty and the film’s unusual direction shape the experience.

    • Polish Release, cover may contain Polish text/markings. The disk has English audio.
  8. 5. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

As a direct continuation with another nearby-camp setup, Part 2 shows the early series establishing its recognizable slasher rhythm. Its value is partly in seeing that formula take shape: the setting supports creeping suspicion, while the group dynamic gives the danger human targets to disrupt. It is a strong release-order watch after the original, especially for anyone interested in how the franchise develops its central threat.

  9. 4. Friday the 13th Part III (1982)

Part III earns a high placement for how firmly it leans into the series’ now-familiar iconography and escalates the early formula. Its appeal is less about reinventing the premise than about making the franchise feel more fully defined. For a viewer sampling the classic run, it is a useful point at which atmosphere, recognizable imagery, and slasher set pieces converge.

  10. 3. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

The title promises an ending, and the film carries a strong sense of culmination even though the franchise continued. Paramount+’s guide explicitly notes that the “Final Chapter” was not actually final. As a standalone viewing choice, it ranks highly because it gives the early cycle a climactic feel and makes the threat feel consequential rather than routine.

  11. 2. Friday the 13th (1980)

The original remains essential context: it establishes the camp setting and foundational setup that later films revisit and vary. Its slower-burn atmosphere makes it a better starting point than a purely action-led introduction, even if viewers accustomed to later Jason-focused entries may find its shape different. Paramount Pictures identifies it as an R-rated 1980 horror film and lists its runtime as 120 minutes; its official page also notes a 4K UHD release. Paramount Pictures’ film page provides those edition and title details.

  12. 1. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

Jason Lives takes the top place for the way it brings pace, dark humor, and Jason’s screen presence together. It understands that the series can be frightening and knowingly entertaining at once, without losing the momentum of the threat. That tonal confidence makes it the most rewatchable choice in this ranking and a strong pick for anyone who wants one film that captures the franchise’s recognizable later-era formula.

What order should you watch the films in?

For a first pass, watch them in theatrical release order, from Friday the 13th (1980) through Friday the 13th (2009). The complete sequence is the ranking above read from 12 up to 1. That approach avoids the confusion of treating a subjective best-to-worst order as a story chronology, and it includes the crossover and reboot in their actual release positions. The release dates are listed by The Numbers; that database establishes release history, not a required viewing order.

How many Friday the 13th movies are there?

The sources reviewed list 12 feature films in the franchise, released between 1980 and 2009. The count includes the 2003 Freddy vs. Jason crossover and the 2009 reboot. The original is a 1980 R-rated horror film with a 120-minute runtime listed by Paramount Pictures; that runtime applies to the original, not the whole series.
