Friday the 13th is considered unlucky in some traditions, but the superstition has no securely established single origin—and there is little evidence that the date itself causes bad outcomes. The next Friday the 13th is November 13, 2026. Memes often play on the gap between the day’s ominous reputation and the ordinary mishaps of daily life, while the phrase also evokes the long-running horror-film franchise.

When is the next Friday the 13th?

The next one after October 7, 2026, is Friday, November 13, 2026. The calendar also has Friday the 13ths in February and March 2026. A month has one when it begins on a Sunday. Time and Date explains the calendar pattern.

Why do people consider Friday the 13th unlucky?

The superstition brings together two beliefs that existed separately: that Friday could be an inauspicious day and that 13 could be an unlucky number. The Library of Congress traces the combined belief to France in the first half of the 19th century, followed by its spread to America in the second half. That history makes Friday the 13th a cultural tradition, not an ancient belief with one proven starting point. The Library of Congress account of the possible origins separates evidence from later explanations.

Popular origin stories are not established history

Several familiar stories try to explain the date, but they do not prove that the superstition began in antiquity:

  • The Last Supper: A later interpretation connects 13 to Jesus and the twelve disciples and Friday to the crucifixion. The Bible does not say Judas was the thirteenth guest or assign him a seat.
  • The Code of Hammurabi: The original inscription does not number its laws. Gaps in numbering in later editions do not establish an ancient fear of 13.
  • Norse mythology: The primary texts about Baldr’s death do not describe a dinner attended by twelve gods and an uninvited thirteenth guest.
  • The Knights Templar: The arrest of Templars on Friday, October 13, 1307, happened, but the Library of Congress finds no evidence connecting it to the superstition in the medieval period.

Thomas William Lawson’s 1907 novel Friday, the Thirteenth, set in the world of Wall Street, helped popularize the belief; it did not invent it. The story already treats the date as unlucky. The 1980 horror film Friday the 13th later made the phrase an especially familiar pop-culture reference. HISTORY.com covers the film and the date’s popular history.

What do Friday the 13th memes mean?

There is no single definitive meme format. A common comic approach is to set the date’s dramatic reputation against a mundane event: a small inconvenience is framed as proof that the day is cursed, or someone treats an ordinary Friday as ominous simply because it is the 13th. That contrast is an interpretation of the humor, not evidence that the date causes misfortune.

Rank #2

The phrase can also prompt confusion for people unfamiliar with the tradition: it refers both to the superstition and, for many viewers, to the horror film and franchise. The movie helped cement the cultural association, but the superstition predates it by well over a century.

Is Friday the 13th unlucky everywhere?

No. The unlucky date varies by culture, and 13 is not invariably seen as a bad number. The Library of Congress notes that Tuesday the 13th is considered unlucky in some Spanish-speaking countries and Greece, while Friday the 17th has that association in Italy. In the United States, 13 also has a positive national association with the thirteen original colonies. The Library of Congress discusses these cultural variations.

Does Friday the 13th cause bad luck?

There is little evidence that Friday the 13th itself affects accidents, hospital visits, or natural disasters, according to Time and Date’s summary of the evidence. The day’s unlucky status is best understood as a belief rather than a demonstrated cause of harm. Frequently repeated figures about how many people fear the date or how much money it supposedly costs are not reliable without a traceable original source.

How did the date become a pop-culture fixture?

Its journey from folklore to familiar reference involved literature and film. Lawson’s 1907 novel used the superstition as part of its story, and the 1980 film gave the same phrase a lasting horror association. People may now use “Friday the 13th” sincerely, jokingly, or as shorthand for the movie series; context usually makes clear which meaning is intended.

The film remains a distinct pop-culture companion to the superstition, not its origin. Paramount identifies the 1980 film on its official film page. Warner Bros. Japan lists a 4K UHD plus Blu-ray set scheduled for November 13, 2026; that is a Japan-market release, not a promise of availability in every country. See the Warner Bros. Japan listing for its regional information.
