Friday the 13th (1980) and Female Power: Alice, Pamela, and the Final Girl

In Friday the 13th (1980), Alice’s survival and Pamela Voorhees’s reveal invite an empowering reading—but the sequel and Final Girl criticism complicate it.

Friday the 13th gives women two very different kinds of power: Alice Hardy fights to survive, while Pamela Voorhees is revealed as the killer. That reversal can feel empowering, but the film does not offer a simple verdict. Actor Adrienne King later wondered whether the twist was intended to empower women or was simply a surprise, while critics have questioned whether the Final Girl’s survival amounts to lasting liberation.

Was the killer in Friday the 13th a woman?

Yes. In the 1980 film, Alice Hardy’s final confrontation is with Pamela Voorhees, not the male killer viewers might expect. Pamela is both the story’s avenging killer and a mother driven by the death of her son. The reveal shifts the film’s gender dynamic: Alice is the threatened survivor, but the antagonist at the center of the climax is also a woman.

King, reflecting on the film in a Dread Central interview, called the choice to give the story a female protagonist and antagonist “just brilliant on Sean’s part, I think.” Her comment describes the effect of the pairing; it should not be treated as proof of director Sean Cunningham’s intent.

Is Alice a Final Girl?

Yes. Alice is the woman who remains to face the threat in the climax and survives the film’s immediate confrontation. Her power is practical rather than abstract: she keeps going under pressure and acts to defend herself. King described the film as setting “the standard for a woman completely fending for herself until the very end.” That is the actor’s retrospective assessment of Alice’s role, not a guarantee that the character remains safe beyond the first film.

Was Friday the 13th empowering to women?

It can be read that way, but the evidence supports a qualified answer rather than a definitive label. In a 2016 Daily Dead interview, King reflected on the reversal: “And sometimes I think about if it was accidentally empowering women, or if they just wanted to do something that had a twist.” Her uncertainty matters: a story can create an empowering effect for some viewers without having been designed as a feminist statement.

King also said that writer Victor Miller “tapped into the idea that women can be feminine and strong at the same time.” This is her interpretation of the female characters. The film does place a woman in the role of active survivor and another in the role of killer, but those roles do not settle what the movie says about women’s power. Pamela’s violence is not the same thing as liberation, and Alice’s agency does not by itself make the film’s gender politics straightforward.

Does surviving make the Final Girl a feminist figure?

Not automatically. A Final Girl is often discussed as a woman who becomes active against danger, but her power may be limited, conditional, or framed through conventions traditionally coded as masculine. A Warwick essay on slasher films summarizes this critical tension: the heroine’s active role can be associated with phallic or masculine-coded weapons. That is theoretical context for reading the genre, not a claim that every moment in Friday the 13th works the same way.

The useful distinction is between agency in a scene and liberation as a larger political outcome. Alice’s struggle and survival give her agency in the first film’s climax. They do not establish that the film rejects restrictive gender codes, or that survival alone makes its heroine a feminist symbol.

What happens to Alice and Ginny in the sequel?

The franchise complicates any reading of Alice’s first-film survival as lasting security. In his essay on the series, critic Tony Williams notes that Alice falls victim to Jason in the prologue of Friday the 13th Part 2. He also reads Ginny, the sequel’s heroine, as temporarily adopting Mrs. Voorhees’s authoritarian role as a strategy for survival. The contrast is revealing: Alice’s survival is brief across the series, while Ginny’s resourcefulness involves taking on the antagonist’s role, at least for a time.

Williams’s reading is one critical interpretation, not a universal account of the franchise. It does, however, show why “Final Girl” should not be treated as a fixed promise of safety or a single model of female power. Outcomes and strategies vary from film to film.

How to read female power in the original film

  • Alice’s power: her capacity to act and defend herself during the immediate threat.
  • Pamela’s power: the killer’s control of the story’s central danger, made more striking by the reveal that she is a woman.
  • The film’s gender reversal: a narrative choice that can invite an empowering response without proving a particular authorial intention.
  • The Final Girl’s limits: survival may be temporary, and active resistance does not by itself resolve the character’s broader ideological meaning.

These distinctions keep the film’s most interesting tension intact: women occupy both sides of its central conflict, but the reversal is not a simple answer to whether Friday the 13th is feminist.
