A French roll is a rounded updo formed by sweeping hair to one side, rolling it across the back of the head, and tucking the ends inside. Bobby pins create the anchor; the finish can be smooth and formal or softly textured with a few loose strands. The terms “French roll” and “French twist” overlap, but a roll is often described as a sideways, fuller shape, while a classic twist rises upward toward the crown.
French roll vs. French twist: what changes?
There is no universally fixed naming distinction, so focus on the silhouette and direction. Hair.com describes the French roll as a relaxed relative of the French twist, while L’Oréal Paris distinguishes a sideways, voluminous roll from a twist directed upward toward the crown. In everyday styling, the names may overlap.

How to make a French roll at home
1. Prepare your hair and pin an anchor
Part your hair as you like, then sweep it toward one side. If your hair is slippery, a light texture product may help it grip. Place bobby pins vertically up the back of your head along the side where the hair is gathered; these pins create the foundation for the roll.

2. Roll and tuck
Sweep the remaining hair over the pinned foundation. Twist it upward and horizontally across the back of your head to form the rounded roll, then tuck the ends inside for a neater shape.
3. Secure and choose your finish
Add pins from the opposite side to hold the shape. A French twist comb is an optional accessory, not a requirement. Gently loosen the roll and pull out a few face-framing strands for a softer effect, or smooth the hair close to the head for a more formal finish. Choose a finish for the occasion
Sleek and formal
Keep the surface smooth, tuck the ends out of sight, and pin any loose sections close to the roll. A light tease at the crown can add height; L’Oréal Paris also suggests finishing a classic twist with hairspray. For a wedding or another formal event, Hair.com suggests considering a professional stylist rather than relying on a new at-home technique on the day.
Textured and relaxed
Leave the roll a little softer, allow a few tendrils to frame the face, or make the shape slightly asymmetrical. Hairstylist and educator Vivienne Mackinder describes modern French twists as “undone, textured, asymmetrical and playful,” in contrast with the classic sleek, polished version. Her comments concern the French twist, but the same finish choices can guide a French-roll variation.

Adapt the technique to your hair
Shorter hair and loose layers
There is no established universal minimum length for every French-roll variation. L’Oréal Paris says shoulder-length hair can suit its classic French-twist method and notes that shorter hair may have trouble forming that signature twist; Hair.com’s French-roll tutorial does not give a minimum length. With shorter layers, secure the main shape first, then pin loose pieces individually.
Long hair
Extra length may extend beyond the roll. Fold the tail back and tuck it inside before adding the final pins; the French-twist guidance from Hair.com and L’Oréal Paris describes tucking excess length under the twist.

Slippery, curly, or textured hair
Hairstylist Limoz Logli advises that day-old hair can offer useful grip, or freshly washed hair can be given a little added texture; very soft, slippery hair may be harder to hold. He also notes that curly or textured hair often holds naturally and may need less product, with careful shaping and anchoring. These are expert recommendations, not rules that apply identically to everyone.
