Are free Studio Ghibli pumpkin templates officially available?
No official free Ghibli pumpkin template was verified. Search surfaced a user-created “Howl and Sophie Pumpkin Stencil,” but the listing could not be inspected, so it is not possible to confirm that the file can still be downloaded, whether it is free, or what the creator permits. Do not treat a search result or free download as proof that a design is official or licensed.
Studio Ghibli’s copyright list, revised in February 2024, names rights holders for many works and says Ghibli holds and manages copyright as one rights holder for those works, except Grave of the Fireflies. It lists My Neighbor Totoro as © 1988 Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli. Studio Ghibli’s copyright notices provide rights-holder context, not confirmation that a particular online stencil is authorized.
What to check before downloading or sharing a fan stencil
Studio Ghibli’s Public Relations/Copyright Management page says, “Except as expressly stated below, we do not authorize any use of the copyrighted works owned by us without our permission.” The exceptions it describes include statutory exceptions and use of still images supplied on Ghibli’s website within reasonable, customary limits and strictly for non-commercial purposes. That wording does not establish blanket permission for making or sharing character stencils. Read Studio Ghibli’s permissions information before assuming a use is allowed.

In a December 9, 2024 notice, Ghibli said some stores and online shops were selling unauthorized reproductions made from its films and publications, and encouraged fans to support officially licensed and authorized businesses. That notice addresses the reproductions and sales it describes; it is not a definitive legal ruling about every personal pumpkin carving. Fans looking for official Ghibli print materials can consult the international publications catalog, which lists officially licensed books and printed materials. It does not establish that the catalog includes pumpkin templates.
- Look for the creator’s own page rather than an unattributed repost.
- Check whether the file is actually downloadable and whether its terms address personal use, printing, or sharing.
- Do not describe a fan-made pattern as official unless Ghibli or an authorized publisher identifies it that way.

Make and transfer a stencil safely
Official Disney and Nintendo pumpkin activities illustrate a practical paper-and-tape transfer method; their instructions are general craft guidance, not Ghibli endorsement. You will need a pumpkin, regular paper, tape, a marker or pushpin, and suitable pumpkin-carving tools. A basic pumpkin-carving kit is optional task equipment, not a source of Ghibli artwork.

- Choose a simple design and size it. Match the design to the pumpkin’s flattest area and your carving experience. For a custom pattern, use a stencil tool’s preview and sizing features before printing.
- Print and attach the paper. Tape the pattern to a clean, dry pumpkin. Alternatively, copy the outline onto the pumpkin with a water-based marker.
- Transfer the outline. If the paper is taped on, mark the design through it with a pushpin, nail, or plastic poking tool, following the pattern’s lines. Remove the paper when the outline is clear.
- Carve from the center outward. Start with small interior details, then work outward so surrounding sections remain supported as you cut.
- Keep sharp-tool work with an adult. Disney’s instructions specify adult cutting; Play Nintendo likewise advises children to ask an adult for help with sharp tools.
These transfer and carving steps are adapted from Disney’s Ariel pumpkin-carving activity and Play Nintendo’s Yoshi stencil activity.
