Free Guy is a 2021 action-adventure comedy about Guy, a bank teller who discovers that his world is the fictional open-world shooter Free City—and that he is one of its background characters. Rather than follow the game’s violent reward system, Guy chooses to help people, setting himself on a path to become the hero of his own story.

Guy lives a familiar routine as a bank teller in Free City, a world that looks like a bustling city but is actually part of a video game. After he realizes he is a non-player character, or NPC, he begins making choices that set him apart from the game’s player-controlled characters. Millie, who appears in the game as Molotov Girl, helps him make sense of Free City and its rules.

Director Shawn Levy described the fictional game as an open-world shooter where players earn points and level up through lawless behavior. Guy’s instinct to be kind, rather than to pursue those rewards, becomes the story’s central contrast. Those mechanics belong to the movie’s invented game world; they should not be taken as a claim about how real video games generally work.
What is the film’s theme?
Alongside its action and comedy, the film asks what it means to stop being a background character and to take more agency in one’s life. Levy told D23, “We wanted to take a script about a background character in a video game and turn it into a movie about all of us and our desire to live more empowered, impactful lives.”

In a Disney News interview, Levy also connected the premise to feeling stuck in a loop or overlooked, and to the importance of noticing and empathizing with people who are in the background of someone else’s story. That emphasis gives Guy’s small acts of consideration meaning beyond the game’s scorekeeping.
Is Free Guy a video game movie?
It is a film set inside a video game, but its story is not presented as an adaptation of an existing game franchise. D23 describes the project as beginning with Matt Lieberman’s original spec screenplay. Levy said he and Ryan Reynolds developed its themes and relatable elements, aiming for a feel-good action comedy with a video-game backdrop rather than simply a “video-game movie.”

The film also includes gaming-community cameos. Disney News identifies LazarBeam and Ninja among them, based on comments by cast member Utkarsh Ambudkar; that is not a complete cameo list.

Shawn Levy directed the film, with a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn. In Disney News, Jodie Comer said the movie’s action-comedy label does not tell the whole story: she noted that it “evokes so much emotion” and has “so much heart” at its core.

20th Century Studios lists the US release date as August 13, 2021, a PG-13 rating, and a runtime of 1 hour 55 minutes. Rating classifications can differ by territory.

Disney+ Press reported on December 16, 2021 that Free Guy had grossed over $330 million worldwide by that date. The same announcement said it had won the 2021 People’s Choice Award for Comedy Movie and received a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy.
