There is no well-supported figure for Freddie Mercury’s current net worth. He died in 1991, and the widely reported $250 million figure refers to an estimate of his estate’s earnings in 2024—not his personal wealth or the estate’s present-day value.
Why there is no current personal net worth figure
Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar on September 5, 1946, became Queen’s lead singer and a songwriter before pursuing solo work. He died on November 24, 1991. The official Freddie Mercury biography outlines his career; QueenOnline gives his birth and death details.
Because Mercury died, he has no personal income today. Money generated after his death may accrue to an estate or other rights holders. A net-worth figure could mean his wealth at death, the assets and rights inherited by others, earnings during a particular year, or the value of a rights transaction. Those are different measures, and the sources available do not establish a verified current estate balance sheet or authoritative probate valuation.
What the $250 million figure measures
Forbes estimated that Mercury’s estate generated $250 million in 2024, tying the exceptional total chiefly to Queen’s catalog sale. This is an estimate of earnings for that year, not Mercury’s personal net worth or the estate’s current balance. Forbes does not establish the exact catalog deal value or how much of any proceeds was attributable to Mercury’s estate.

An annual earnings estimate does not, by itself, show what remains after taxes, liabilities, costs, or distributions. Nor does a reported transaction value establish the amount received by a particular beneficiary. The Forbes estimate should therefore be read as a dated measure of estate earnings, not a valuation of assets on hand.
What is reported about Mary Austin’s inheritance
In a 2026 interview, The Guardian reported that Mercury told Mary Austin she would inherit his house and 50% of his fortune and future royalties. The Guardian also reported that Austin denied claims her interest later rose to 75% after Mercury’s parents died. These are attributed reports, not a complete accounting of estate assets, rights, or distributions.

When a story gives a figure for Freddie Mercury’s net worth, check what the number actually describes:
- Measure: Is it wealth at death, estate assets, annual posthumous earnings, a beneficiary’s wealth, or a transaction value?
- Date: Does it describe 1991, a specific later reporting year, or a claimed current value?
- Source: Is the number attributed to a named outlet or an original record, or is it repeated without a verifiable basis?
- Scope: Does it distinguish gross earnings or proceeds from assets remaining after taxes, liabilities, costs, and distributions?
The sources cited here do not support a precise figure for Mercury’s wealth at death or the estate’s value today. The most specific recent number is Forbes’s $250 million estimate of estate earnings in 2024; it should not be presented as a current net worth.
