Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991. The Queen singer’s signature song, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” had arrived 16 years earlier, in 1975, and remains one of rock’s most celebrated recordings. Calling it the greatest rock song of all time is a matter of taste—not a settled fact—but its chart record and later honors help explain why the claim endures.
What song did Freddie Mercury leave behind?
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” released by Queen in 1975 and associated with the album A Night at the Opera, is the song most closely identified with Mercury. Queen’s official biography says it spent nine weeks at number one in the UK on its original release. That is a substantial chart achievement, though a chart position measures popularity at a particular time, not artistic quality for all time. Queen’s official biography
The song’s stature also rests on the band’s own belief in it. Queen drummer Roger Taylor recalled: “I always believed in Bohemian Rhapsody from the start, the first time Fred played us his idea for it, I remember thinking, ‘Oh, this is something special.’ And it was.” Queen’s 50th-anniversary announcement
Was it really voted the greatest rock song of all time?
There is no objective, universally accepted ranking that proves one song is the greatest. Queen’s 2025 announcement says listeners to Gold Radio’s Top 300 Hall of Fame poll named “Bohemian Rhapsody” the best single of all time. That is a meaningful accolade from that poll’s electorate, but the announcement does not give a sample size or methodology that would make the result representative of all listeners. The phrase “Greatest Rock Song of All Time” has also appeared in Queen and Universal Music Group promotional language. In 2018, UMG reported that the song and its official video had passed 1.6 billion streams globally across major streaming services. That figure describes the milestone at the time of the announcement; it is not a current stream count, nor does streaming volume settle a question of artistic merit. Why does the song’s legacy extend beyond a chart record?
“Bohemian Rhapsody” became part of a larger story for Queen and A Night at the Opera. In an anniversary announcement, guitarist Brian May described the album as “a hugely important album for us” and said, “It opened up the world for us.” The song’s enduring reputation is reflected in its original UK chart run, the listener-poll result Queen reported in 2025, and the band members’ own recollections—not in a single definitive measure of greatness.
