He said he wanted men’s gymnastics attire to feel more comfortable and look more modern—and was prepared to keep wearing the design to push for change.
What Fred Richard wore at the 2025 U.S. Championships
The Associated Press reported on August 10, 2025, that Richard wore shorts with compression leggings instead of the customary men’s gymnastics attire. He competed in the outfit despite a reported deduction of 0.3 points per competition day. The Boston Globe also reported the deduction in 2025, describing it as required by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).
The exact current FIG attire-rule wording has not been established here. The deduction and its per-day application should therefore be understood as reported for that competition, not as a definitive statement of the rule now in force.
Why Richard wanted a different uniform
In an interview reported by CBS Boston on August 15, 2025, Richard said he had long found the customary uniform uncomfortable and questioned why athletes had to wear it. His case is about his own experience; the reporting does not establish that the traditional attire is uncomfortable for every gymnast.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“And it just never felt comfortable and I’ve just always wondered like, ‘Why do I have to wear this?’ And now I realize we don’t we have to, we can make a change to it.”
Richard also told the Associated Press he was willing to keep wearing his design while advocating for a change: “I’ll wear it for the next 10 years if I have to.” He framed the change as a way to make men’s gymnastics more accessible, but the reporting provides no participation figures showing that a different uniform increases recruitment or involvement in the sport.

How the reported deduction related to his result
The AP reported that Richard finished second behind Asher Hong and edged Fuzzy Benas by less than a quarter point. The story noted that Richard’s margin over Benas might have been more comfortable in the traditional uniform. That is a comparison of the reported margin, not proof that the attire deduction changed the final placing.
Why matching outfits matter to some gymnasts
There is a competing consideration: judging consistency. The AP reported that gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik said identical outfits can help judges do their jobs, while also allowing for some flexibility. The reporting does not establish whether looser apparel affects judging accuracy, so the issue remains a balance between athletes’ comfort and expression and the value some see in consistent attire.

What the uniform debate does—and does not—establish
Richard’s choice made the debate visible at a major U.S. competition: an athlete can seek a more comfortable design while accepting a reported scoring penalty. It does not, by itself, establish that the design improves performance, broadens participation, or complies with every current competition rule. The sources identify shorts and compression leggings, but no brand or model; they are not evidence that any similar retail outfit is approved for sanctioned competition.
