Francis Ford Coppola and Viola Davis were among the actors and filmmakers who paid tribute to Gene Hackman after reports of his death at 95 in February 2025. Coppola remembered a “great artist” whose work inspired both mourning and celebration; Davis praised Hackman as “tough yet vulnerable” and “one of the greats.” Their tributes appeared alongside remembrances from Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks and others.
What Francis Ford Coppola said about Gene Hackman
Coppola, who directed Hackman in the 1974 film The Conversation, shared his tribute on Instagram. He wrote: “The loss of a great artist, always cause for both mourning and celebration: Gene Hackman a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity, I mourn his loss, and celebrate his existence and contribution.”
His words connected grief for Hackman with appreciation for the range and complexity he brought to his work. Director Paul Feig also singled out The Conversation, writing on X that Hackman’s performance “changed the way I looked at acting and what actors could bring to a role.”
What Viola Davis said about Gene Hackman
Davis posted her tribute on Instagram, naming four films in which she admired Hackman: The Conversation, The French Connection, The Poseidon Adventure and Unforgiven. She wrote: “Loved you in everything! ‘The Conversation,’ ‘The French Connection,’ ‘The Poseidon Adventure,’ ‘Unforgiven’ —tough yet vulnerable. You were one of the greats. God bless those who loved you. Rest well, sir.”

Tributes from Hackman’s collaborators and fellow actors
Clint Eastwood remembered a friend and fellow actor
Eastwood, who worked with Hackman on Unforgiven, praised both his craft and their friendship in a statement: “There was no finer actor than Gene. Intense and instinctive. Never a false note. He was also a dear friend whom I will miss very much.” The assessment was Eastwood’s own, paired with a personal expression of loss.
