The Mustang in Bullitt was a 1968 Mustang GT fastback. Ford later revived the Bullitt name for new production special editions inspired by that film car; none of those editions is the original movie vehicle. The 2019 Bullitt paired the tribute styling with a Ford-rated 5.0-liter V8 producing 480 horsepower on 93-octane fuel in the U.S. market.
What Mustang appeared in Bullitt?
Ford says the 1968 film used two identical Mustang GT fastbacks. One was the hero car driven by Steve McQueen; the other was used for many of the chase sequence’s jumps. The distinction matters: the familiar screen car and the car subjected to much of the stunt work were separate vehicles.
In its January 2018 account, Ford says Warner Bros. sold the hero car to a private buyer after filming and sent the jumper to a salvage yard. Ford reported that the jumper resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017. The hero car passed to Sean Kiernan in 2014, when he inherited it from his father Robert, who had bought it in 1974. The family and Ford revealed the surviving hero car alongside the new 2019 edition at the 2018 North American International Auto Show.
How did Ford turn the film car into a production Bullitt?
The later Bullitt Mustangs are commemorative production models, not replicas or the original screen-used car. Ford’s Europe announcement for the 2019 edition identifies 2001 and 2008 as earlier Bullitt special editions. It describes the lineage as drawing on the film car’s restrained look, with cues such as Torq Thrust-style wheels, distinctive styling details, and limited exterior paint choices that included Dark Highland Green.

The appeal is the contrast between an understated appearance and a performance-focused Mustang. The 2019 model marked the film’s 50th anniversary, translating the Highland Green fastback’s visual identity into a contemporary factory edition rather than attempting to reproduce a 1968 car. Ford introduced the European model in its March 2018 announcement.
What performance did Ford claim for the 2019 Bullitt?
Ford published two horsepower figures in different 2018–19 materials. Its January 2018 announcement gave the car at least 475 horsepower, 420 lb-ft of torque, and a 163 mph top speed. Ford’s U.S. 2019 Mustang brochure specified 480 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 420 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm on 93-octane fuel. These are Ford’s published specifications, not independent test results.

| Ford source and context | Published performance | Other stated details |
|---|---|---|
| January 2018 announcement of the 2019 Bullitt | At least 475 hp; 420 lb-ft; 163 mph top speed | Headline figures in Ford’s announcement |
| U.S. 2019 Mustang brochure | 480 hp at 7,000 rpm and 420 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm on 93-octane fuel | Upgraded 5.0L V8, 87 mm throttle body, six-speed manual transmission |
The figures should be read in their source context: the announcement says “at least 475,” while the U.S. brochure specifies 480 horsepower with the stated fuel. The available Ford materials do not establish instrumented comparisons with a standard GT or earlier Bullitt editions.
Why the famous jump is not a performance test
The film’s chase made the Mustang’s jumps iconic, but that scene is not a reason to imitate them. Ford’s 2019 U.S. brochure says its demonstration vehicle was modified for safety and driven by a professional stunt driver on a closed course. Its warning is explicit: “Vehicle modified for safety (Never jump your Mustang). Professional stunt driver on a closed course (Again … NEVER jump your Mustang). Do not attempt (We are not kidding – DO NOT ATTEMPT).”

What the Bullitt legacy means
The legacy has two distinct parts: a 1968 GT fastback tied to a landmark film chase, and a series of later factory editions that borrowed its name and visual restraint while offering contemporary Mustang performance. Ford’s records provide the historical account and the modern models’ claimed specifications; they do not make the later cars the same vehicle as the surviving movie hero car.
