Adam Sandler topped Forbes’s 2023 highest-paid actors list with an estimated $73 million after representation fees. Margot Robbie ranked second at $59 million, and Tom Cruise was third at $45 million. Forbes’s figures cover qualifying entertainment earnings in calendar year 2023; they are estimates, not audited disclosures or a ranking of actors’ salaries alone.

The ranking was published March 6, 2024, and reports estimated U.S.-dollar earnings after representation fees. Gross amounts are included where Forbes supplied them. The tied positions are preserved.

Forbes put the ten actors’ combined estimated earnings at $449 million. The ranking measures earnings attributed to entertainment work, not artistic merit or lifetime wealth. Forbes Australia’s March 6, 2024 report reproduces the Forbes reporting by Matt Craig.
What the figures include—and what “net” means
Forbes based its estimates on interviews with agents, lawyers, managers, executives and other industry experts, as well as data sources including IMDbPro and Polestar. The amounts are pretax estimates for entertainment work in calendar 2023, less representation fees. Forbes cited industry-standard reference deductions of 10% for agents, 10% for managers and 5% for lawyers, while noting that some actors do not have all three representatives.

“Net” in this ranking means after those representation fees, not after income tax or personal expenses. The gross amount is the corresponding figure before those fees where reported. These are not public tax returns or audited compensation statements.
The list covers entertainment work such as acting, producing, directing and stand-up; unrelated business ventures are excluded. Forbes credits a project’s compensation to the year it was released, even if an upfront fee was paid earlier. Back-end participation may arrive later, so the year a project appears on the list need not match the year the money was paid.

Why Sandler, Robbie and Cruise led the list
Adam Sandler: films and a busy stand-up schedule
Forbes attributed Sandler’s estimated $73 million net to three Netflix film projects and more than 40 stand-up tour dates during 2023. It reported that Netflix viewers streamed more than 500 million hours of Sandler movies in the first half of that year. Forbes also relayed Netflix’s report that Murder Mystery 2 was watched for 173 million hours in its first three months and ranked in the platform’s Top 10 in 90 countries. Those are platform-reported viewing figures, not independent audience measurements.
Margot Robbie: star and producer of Barbie
Forbes connected Robbie’s estimated $59 million net to Barbie, which it said grossed $1.45 billion worldwide in theaters. Robbie was both the film’s star and a producer; Forbes estimated her share of back-end profits at more than $60 million. It also noted her production company LuckyChap and a new first-look deal with Warner Bros.

The estimate reflects more than a conventional acting fee: Forbes said Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s listed Barbie compensation included estimated box-office, video-on-demand and first streaming-window income. Additional compensation could follow as later participation is paid.
Tom Cruise: theatrical participation and ongoing on-demand income
Forbes tied Cruise’s estimated $45 million net to Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning and continuing streaming and on-demand profits from Top Gun: Maverick. It described his “first-dollar gross” arrangement as a share of box-office and other revenue from release, before the studio recoups its costs. That contract description is Forbes’s account.

The three leading entries illustrate different ways entertainment income can be counted. Sandler’s total combined film work with live stand-up; Robbie’s reflected producing and estimated profit participation in a theatrical hit; Cruise’s included a revenue arrangement tied to release as well as continuing digital income. A streaming deal may pay more upfront while buying out later back-end participation, whereas a successful theatrical release can produce continuing revenue for participants with profit shares.
Forbes observed that the list leaned heavily toward movie work rather than television. It linked that pattern in part to the writers’ and actors’ strikes, which shut down Hollywood for roughly half the year and delayed or shortened television seasons. The list is therefore a snapshot of estimated earnings tied to projects released in 2023, not a complete measure of anyone’s long-term earning power.
