Ed tells Kelly that he stayed on Mars because the prospect of aging into dependence terrifies him—and because he wants to leave a legacy there. Meanwhile, Dev’s group is racing to redirect Goldilocks, Kelly finds methane in Korolev crater, and Margo and Sergei imagine a future in Brazil. The episode ends with Sergei murdered before that plan can go anywhere.
What happens in “Brazil”?
“Brazil” is season 4, episode 9 of For All Mankind. Apple’s regional episode listing gives it a 46-minute runtime and a January 5, 2024 release date, and describes the story this way: “Things start to go awry just as an important mission approaches a critical juncture.” Apple TV’s episode listing
The central conflict is a race over Goldilocks, the asteroid that NASA and Roscosmos intend to capture for Earth. Dev and Ed’s covert group wants to redirect it toward Mars instead. Their plan is running out of time, and a new ally may give them a way to act.
Why did Ed stay on Mars?
Ed finally tells Kelly that he is afraid of what returning to Earth would mean as he gets older. He imagines becoming frail and dependent, eventually confined to a nursing home. On Mars, he believes he can keep making choices for himself—and leave a legacy.

That is the explanation Ed gives Kelly in this conversation, not a catch-all explanation for every decision he has made. His confession makes clear that staying is not only about ambition: it is also a way of resisting a future he fears.
How is the Goldilocks heist running out of time?
Dev’s group has not managed to connect to Ranger, the spacecraft attached to Goldilocks. Sam has been aboard Ranger for a month, but the capture window is only 48 hours from closing, according to Space.com’s January 5, 2024 recap. Without a connection, the conspirators risk losing their chance to interfere with the asteroid’s destination.

Sam damages the discriminator and communications equipment so that it will have to be replaced. The repair creates an opening for the conspirators to try to get access. The stakes are a choice between the planned Earth-bound capture and the group’s attempt to send Goldilocks toward Mars.
Why does Lee join Ed and Miles?
Ed and Miles ask North Korean Lieutenant Colonel Lee to give them access to the surveillance feed. Ed argues that bringing Goldilocks to Mars could secure the planet’s future—and a future for Lee’s wife. Lee agrees to help, committing himself to a conspiracy that could shape the rest of his life.

What does Kelly discover in Korolev crater?
Kelly reports methane in unexpected locations in Korolev crater. The finding raises two possibilities discussed in the episode: subsurface volcanic activity or microbial life. The episode does not establish that life exists on Mars; methane’s cause remains unresolved.

After their tentative reunion, Sergei suggests that he and Margo could offer their expertise to Brazil’s space program and seek asylum there once the asteroid mission is over. It is a possible escape they discuss, not a completed plan: the mission has not yet concluded, and they have not left for Brazil.

What happens to Sergei at the end of “Brazil”?
In the closing scene, an assassin shoots Sergei and stages the scene to look like a suicide. His death abruptly ends the future he and Margo had just begun to imagine. The episode summary does not conclusively establish the killer’s identity, so the scene’s staging should not be mistaken for proof of who ordered or carried out the murder.
