“Florante at Laura Script” can mean two different things. The original work is Francisco Balagtas’s 1838 Tagalog awit—a 12-syllable-line verse narrative, not a prose play. A page labeled “Buong Script – Florante at Laura” is a scene-and-dialogue adaptation for school performance. Use the adaptation when you need parts and stage action; use a named edition of Balagtas’s poem when you need the author’s actual text, quotation, or literary analysis.
What the title refers to
The work’s full historic title is Pinagdaanang Buhay ni Florante at ni Laura sa kahariang Albania, kinuha sa madlang “cuadro historico” o pinturang nagsasabi sa mga nangyayari nang unang panahon sa imperio ng Grecia at tinula ng isang matuwain sa bersong Tagalog. Florante at Laura is the standard shortened title.
Francisco Baltazar, better known as Francisco Balagtas, published it in 1838. Literary histories classify it as an awit, a metrical romance whose lines have twelve syllables. The related corrido generally uses eight-syllable lines. Calling the work a “script” without qualification can therefore mislead readers: Balagtas wrote a poem, while later teachers and students have converted its episodes into performable dialogue.
Poem, adaptation, or study text?
| Material | What it is | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Balagtas’s poem | The 1838 Tagalog awit, in an original or modernized edition | Close reading, quotation, historical and literary study |
| School “Buong Script” | A scene-based dramatic adaptation with dialogue and performance cues | Class presentation, casting, rehearsal and staging |
| Translated or annotated edition | The poem with another-language translation, notes, glossary or introduction | Readers who need language support or contextual explanation |
Dialogue in a school adaptation should not be presented as Balagtas’s verse. Adaptations may condense episodes, rearrange events, modernize speech or assign narration that does not appear in the poem.

Who wrote it and what an awit means
Project Gutenberg identifies the author as Francisco Baltazar (AKA Francisco Balagtas) and presents Tagalog and Spanish material, with Epifanio de los Santos credited as translator. That digitized text notes that forms such as “ng” and “mga” may reflect older orthography. Modern editions can consequently differ in spelling, punctuation, line breaks, notes and translation. Record the edition whenever you quote a line.
The poem’s twelve-syllable lines belong to the awit tradition of metrical romance. Its distant kingdoms, reversals, loyal friendship and endangered lovers provide the conventions of an adventure narrative, even as the poem invites political and ethical interpretation.
Plot in a form a performance can follow
The story moves among Albania and neighboring realms. Florante, an Albanian nobleman and soldier, is found bound in a dark forest after Adolfo’s seizure of power. Aladin, a Persian Muslim prince, discovers and frees him. Florante then recounts the experiences that led him there: his upbringing and education, his love for Laura, his military service and the betrayal that placed him in danger.
Florante and Laura
Florante’s relationship with Laura supplies the romance’s emotional center. Laura is endangered by the political struggle and by Adolfo’s actions. A script normally turns Florante’s extended narration into scenes, exchanges and entrances that an audience can see.

Adolfo’s seizure of power
Adolfo functions as the principal usurper in the school adaptation. His ambition and betrayal drive the crisis in Albania. Because adaptations vary, performers should check their chosen script for exactly which confrontations, speeches and resolutions it includes rather than assuming every scene reproduces the poem line for line.
Aladin and Flerida
Aladin’s rescue of Florante complicates any simple Christian-versus-Muslim reading. He is a Persian Muslim prince with his own story of love and danger, involving Flerida. Their parallel experiences create a bond across political and religious boundaries.
Menandro and the restoration of order
Menandro supports Florante and helps represent loyal resistance to usurpation. A classroom adaptation may give him expanded connective dialogue or combine his actions with narration. Verify the cast list and scene divisions in the specific version being performed.
Historical setting and interpretation
The poem uses imagined foreign kingdoms and a romance plot rather than a documentary account of the Philippines. Nevertheless, readers and critics have long treated it as an allegory of Filipino suffering under Spanish colonial rule. That is an influential interpretive frame, not a mechanical key in which every character or place has one provable Philippine equivalent. The genre’s adventure conventions and its possible political resonance should be considered together.
Best Value
A 2019 literary-history account reports that Balagtas wrote the work while imprisoned, while also presenting parts of that imprisonment story as alleged. It is more accurate to attribute the claim to that account than to state the biography as settled fact.

- Define the purpose. Choose the complete poem for literary study, an annotated text for guided lessons, a translation for language access, or a stage adaptation for performance.
- Check language and spelling. Identify whether the text preserves older Tagalog orthography, modernizes it, or supplies another language.
- Inspect editorial support. For study, look for a named editor or translator, introduction, glossary, historical notes and a stated textual source.
- Check performance information. A usable script should identify characters, scene divisions, entrances, exits, narration and any abridgement.
- Preserve citation stability. Note the edition, publication details and page or line references before quoting. Do not cite an undated adaptation as though it were the 1838 poem.
The available evidence establishes a school-hosted scene adaptation and a digitized Tagalog/Spanish text, but it does not establish a single “best” edition or prove that every commercial book contains the school script.
Educational use
The Department of Education Learning Portal lists Kaligirang Pangkasaysayan at Buod ng Florante at Laura, a Grade 8 Filipino module published on 21 August 2024. Its objectives include examining the social conditions surrounding the poem, its purpose and its later effects. That listing confirms curricular use of the work; schools may still select different editions, summaries or performance scripts.
Practical guidance for a class performance
- State in the program or teacher’s notes that the production is an adaptation of Balagtas’s poem.
- Keep a separate copy of the poem if students must distinguish original verse from scripted dialogue.
- List whether narration is abridged, modernized or newly written for the production.
- Assign Aladin and Flerida substantial dramatic attention so the Christian-Muslim friendship is not reduced to a villain-versus-hero formula.
- Use the adaptation’s own cast and scene directions; do not import lines from an unrelated version without checking wording and attribution.
What to cite when discussing the work
For the publication year, form and broad historical context, cite a literary-history source such as the 2019 Art Archive 02 article from the Jorge B. Vargas Museum and Filipiniana Research Center. For wording, orthography and translation, identify the particular Project Gutenberg text or print edition consulted. For classroom framing, cite the DepEd Learning Portal record dated 21 August 2024. For a performance, cite the undated school adaptation by its page title and host, while labeling it an adaptation.
