Flight Risk is a brisk, 91-minute airborne thriller built around a strong contained premise: a pilot, an air marshal and a fugitive are trapped together on a flight across Alaska. It may suit viewers looking for a compact, heightened action film, but its critical reception is divided—some reviewers found the script and dialogue a serious weakness. “Cleared for landing” is therefore a qualified verdict, not a claim of universal acclaim.
What is Flight Risk about?
Mark Wahlberg plays a pilot transporting an air marshal and a fugitive across the Alaskan wilderness. Michelle Dockery plays the marshal, and Topher Grace plays the fugitive. As the official synopsis frames it, the journey becomes a test of trust, with the characters’ competing interests driving the suspense. The film’s official site lists Mel Gibson as director and Jared Rosenberg as screenwriter.
The premise puts much of the drama in a confined space: three people with reasons to distrust one another, aboard a plane far from help. Associated Press reviewer Mark Kennedy describes the action as mostly confined to a small cargo aircraft, with Gibson’s camera moving between the cabin and Alaska’s exterior vistas. Kennedy writes, “His camera is lively, shifting between the claustrophobic interior and the expansive Alaska snow-capped vista outside.” That is the reviewer’s assessment of the film’s visual approach, not a promise that the story stays entirely inside the aircraft.
Is Flight Risk worth watching?
It depends on what you want from the setup. If a short, high-concept thriller with escalating suspicion and an intentionally heightened tone sounds appealing, the premise and pace may carry you through. If you need convincing dialogue or a tightly executed script, the negative response is worth taking seriously.

The examples hosted by Rotten Tomatoes illustrate the split rather than establish a complete critical consensus. Empire’s Ian Freer gave the film 3/5 in a review dated February 4, 2025, calling it “a fun, unpretentious, tight 91 minutes.” In contrast, FilmWeek (LAist) critic Christy Lemire wrote on February 11, 2025: “A really cool idea, but the dialogue is terrible.” Kennedy’s Associated Press review was also sharply negative, awarding zero stars out of four. These are distinct critics’ judgments, not a substitute for a current, comprehensive measure of opinion.
The central question is whether the confined setup sustains tension for you. The performances and character dynamics also have to make the shifting alliances engaging enough to outweigh any dialogue that feels strained. Its 91-minute length is an advantage if you prefer a quick thriller; it leaves less room for a slower, more elaborate treatment of the premise.
