In a June 5, 2025 interview with Them, singer-songwriter Fletcher said she had kissed a man, developed romantic feelings and fallen in love with him. She described the experience as surprising and said it informed her song “Boy.” Her account is about one relationship and one song—not a change in her queer identity.
What did Fletcher say happened?
Speaking to Them on June 5, 2025, Fletcher said: “I had kissed a boy and I started feeling romantic and emotional feelings, and it rocked my world.” She said the experience surprised her, too. At the time of that interview, she said she was dating him.
That timing matters: the interview documents what Fletcher said about her feelings and relationship in June 2025. It does not establish her current relationship status, and the cited interviews do not identify the man.
What is “Boy” about?
Fletcher released “Boy” on June 5, 2025, as she announced her third studio album, Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me? The song is included on the album, released July 18, 2025. Universal Music Canada’s announcement identifies it as a new single and the record as her third studio album.

The song turns a personal experience into a public expression of uncertainty and vulnerability. In the Them interview, Fletcher described the album’s central question as being not only whether other people would love her if they knew her fully, but whether she could continue to love herself if they did not. She said of the work: “The whole thing through and through is deeply vulnerable, but I also know that [it’s important] to speak even when your voice shakes or even when you’re in a liminal space somewhere.”
Did the experience change Fletcher’s queer identity?
Fletcher said it did not. In a July 2025 interview with Elle, she affirmed, “I’m queer ’til the day that I die,” and explained that whom she kissed did not change that. She described the album as covering more than her love life, including her relationship with herself, her career, her artistry and her fans.

Fletcher also addressed interpretations of her cleared Instagram posts as a rejection of her sapphic identity. She told Elle that clearing the posts was part of beginning a new album era; she had planned to bring back a decade of work and rejected the idea that she was erasing that part of herself.
How did Fletcher respond to the backlash?
In a June 13, 2025 response quoted by Out, Fletcher pushed back against framing the experience as a man changing or improving her: “I have not been changed by a man. I have not been healed by a man. I am not more evolved for being with a man. I just so happened to fall in love with one, and I wrote a song about it.”
