Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse is Chip and Joanna Gaines’s six-episode 2024 return to the renovation format. The couple restore and flip a 1965, roughly 5,100-square-foot home overlooking Lake Waco, using its original mid-century modern and Spanish Revival character—not a standard farmhouse template—as the design brief.

What is Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse about?

Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse is a six-episode 2024 renovation miniseries in which Chip and Joanna Gaines purchase, restore, and eventually sell a distinctive 1965 home overlooking Lake Waco in Waco, Texas. The series marked the couple’s tenth anniversary of the original Fixer Upper and gave them a different design challenge: this was a speculative flip, not a renovation for a waiting client.

With no named buyer during construction, Joanna had to imagine the family who might ultimately live there. The central design idea was to recover the house’s original identity rather than impose another generic farmhouse makeover. Original blueprints and photographs helped the team reverse changes made during a major 1990s remodel.

The Lake Waco property

Magnolia describes the custom-built house as more than 5,000 square feet on a 1.5-acre property. Published real-estate details put it at roughly 5,100 square feet, with five bedrooms and five bathrooms, on a cliffside site overlooking Lake Waco. The property included a pool, patio, greenhouse, and large outdoor entertaining areas.

The setting shaped nearly every major decision. The renovation added or enlarged openings toward the wooded landscape, introduced skylights, and removed visual barriers that interfered with the lake view. The goal was not simply to decorate a large house, but to make the architecture feel connected to its site.

Construction lasted more than eight months. After the televised reveal, the property sold to a family about a month later, according to Joanna. The buyer’s identity and sale price were not disclosed.

A house built around two architectural languages

The original home combined mid-century modern and Spanish Revival influences. Rather than choosing one style, the Gaineses treated the tension between them as the renovation’s design brief.

Mid-century modern elements appear in the clean lines, low-pitched roof geometry, cherry wood, gridded details, streamlined cabinetry, and period-conscious millwork. Spanish Revival references come through in arches, plaster, terra-cotta, warm earthy colors, natural materials, and textured surfaces.

The resulting palette is warm and nature-forward: terracotta, earthy greens, plastered neutrals, brass, reeded glass, and rich wood. Green paint repeatedly connects the interiors to the surrounding trees, while terra-cotta and plaster give the house a sense of age and regional character.

Joanna’s approach can be summarized by one principle: let the house tell its own story. That meant retaining original features where possible, restoring the home’s proportions and details, and using custom work to bridge the 1960s architecture with contemporary family life.

Room-by-room renovation highlights

Exterior and courtyard

The exterior brick and trim were cleaned and repainted, with the green shade Wooded Acres chosen to reinforce the home’s mid-century character. The roof was replaced with composite shingles, a custom metal window unit was installed, and original exterior sconces were preserved.

In the courtyard, a former garden bed became a pond with a wall-mounted water feature, aquatic plants, koi, filtration, and new landscaping. The feature adds movement and sound to what had been an underused area.

Entryway

The entry establishes the show’s material vocabulary immediately. Pre-poured terrazzo tiles with brass inlays lead to a custom floating cherry-wood staircase with green carpet treads and brass rods. Green tile runs along the staircase wall, while new lighting, a custom wooden front door, and lattice screens replace the former pony wall.

The staircase became one of the project’s principal showpieces because it combines several seemingly different references—terrazzo, brass, cherry wood, tile, and green upholstery—in a single architectural composition.

Library

Original wood floors were stained, sanded, and sealed instead of replaced. Custom cherry-wood sliding doors with reeded glass provide separation while preserving light and visual connection. Built-in shelving, storage, and fold-down desks make the room useful for both work and display.

A gridded display wall gives the library flexibility: it can hold books, art, plants, or vinyl records without requiring a new built-in for every use.

Living room

The living room was shaped around the original fireplace. The team lengthened the windows, refinished the hearth, emphasized the fireplace with textured plaster, rebuilt rounded shelving, and added a floating wood credenza. New lighting and trim complete the update while keeping the room’s original architectural focus intact.

Kitchen and pantry

The kitchen combines warm wood cabinetry with marble and terra-cotta details. Its hidden walk-in pantry protects the main room’s clean lines, while a tiled coffee nook adds a smaller, more domestic moment. The island provides the contemporary gathering function expected from a Gaines renovation.

Terra-cotta references the home’s Spanish Revival side; a mid-century marble star detail brings the other architectural influence into the same room. The kitchen therefore works as a practical example of the series’ larger design strategy: use materials and geometry to make two styles feel intentional together.

Mudroom and laundry room

The mudroom gained wood paneling, peg hooks, a built-in bench, custom storage, and new lighting. Pressed volcanic-ash tile provides a durable surface for a high-traffic area.

In the laundry room, yellow mosaic tile, floating shelves, a tiled folding surface, new appliances, and additional cabinetry turn a purely functional space into a deliberately designed one.

Recreation room

A former kitchen was converted back into a recreation room. The space features curved cherry-wood wall paneling, pressed volcanic-ash flooring, skylights, a retro fireplace, a built-in green sectional, a game table, storage, and layered lighting.

This room is one of the clearest examples of the renovation looking backward and forward at once. Its materials and fireplace feel period-aware, but its layout is designed for modern family use.

Primary bedroom and bathroom

The primary bedroom received a custom built-in bed frame with a green velvet headboard, cherry-wood cabinetry, wallpaper, a seating nook, vintage sconces, sealed original flooring, and a new closet system.

The renovated primary bathroom continues the warm, tactile scheme with terra-cotta flooring, plastered walls, brass-toned fixtures, dual vanities, and a freestanding tub. The result is less stark than a conventional contemporary bathroom and more consistent with the house’s historic vocabulary.

Greenhouse and outdoor areas

The greenhouse was restored with replacement wood, a new roof frame, glass walls and ceiling, fresh paint, globe lights, shelving, plants, and a mini-split air-conditioning unit.

Outside, a deteriorated deck was removed. The team created a level gravel sitting area, added a retaining wall, installed new sod and landscaping, and removed the chain-link fence to improve the view. These changes make the outdoor spaces usable while giving the lake and surrounding trees more visual authority.

The renovation was more than cosmetic

Although the series focuses on visible design decisions, the project also included new HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems throughout the home. That infrastructure work matters because restoring a historic-looking interior while modernizing a large, aging property requires more than new paint and furniture.

The show’s before-and-after appeal therefore comes from several layers at once: recovering lost architectural character, improving circulation and function, updating essential systems, and creating a consistent relationship between the house and its landscape.

When and where did it air?

The documented U.S. premiere was Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 8/7c on Magnolia Network and HGTV. The series aired as two episodes per week across three weeks, concluding June 16, 2024. Same-day streaming was announced for Max and discovery+.

Those details describe the original U.S. rollout, not a permanent worldwide catalog. Streaming rights, pricing, platform names, and availability vary by country and can change. Prime Video has also listed the six-episode series in at least one regional catalog, but viewers should check the listing for their own territory before subscribing or purchasing.

How it fits into the Fixer Upper story

The original Fixer Upper premiered on HGTV in 2014, ran for five seasons, and ended in 2018. HGTV described it as the number-one unscripted series on all of cable television during its initial run. The Lakehouse returns to that format ten years later, but with a meaningful structural change: the Gaineses are not solving a client’s brief or designing around a known family’s immediate needs.

Instead, the property itself becomes the client. Its 1965 construction, 1990s alterations, lake setting, and two competing styles determine the choices. That makes the miniseries especially useful for viewers interested in architectural restoration, adaptive reuse, and the question of how much of a house’s past should survive a modern renovation.

What viewers can take from the design

  • Start with the architecture. The strongest decisions respond to the house’s original forms, materials, and proportions.
  • Use a limited palette across rooms. Green, warm wood, plaster, brass, and terra-cotta recur without making every room identical.
  • Preserve selectively. Original floors, sconces, fireplace elements, and design references survive alongside new infrastructure and storage.
  • Make the view part of the plan. Enlarged windows, skylights, a removed fence, and outdoor restructuring all reinforce the property’s setting.
  • Let custom pieces solve practical problems. The library doors, floating staircase, built-ins, pantry, closet system, and recreation-room storage are decorative and functional at the same time.

Paint, décor, and the official Lakehouse look

Magnolia released an official Lakehouse Collection of paint products and shades tied to the renovation. Named colors include Blanched, Wooded Acres, Cognac, Tranquil Waters, Juniper Tree, Remote Trail, and Superior. They appear across different interior, exterior, trim, cabinetry, and chalk-style product categories, with some colors available in multiple sheens or formats.

Magnolia also maintains Lakehouse-inspired furniture and décor, and its gifts catalog includes The Lakehouse Candle. These are the most direct ways to explore the series’ visual language. The official room guides and downloadable sourcebook are useful for studying the before-and-after specifications, but the sourcebook should not be confused with a verified physical Amazon book or renovation manual.

Is there a DVD or physical season set?

No physical DVD, Blu-ray, or other physical season product was verified for Fixer Upper: The Lakehouse. The title may be available as digital viewing or purchase media in some markets, while the directly related physical products are Magnolia’s paint, décor, furniture, and candle offerings.

That distinction is important for shoppers: a generic search for mid-century décor, koi-pond supplies, interior paint, or renovation tools may produce products that match the theme, but they should not be presented as an official show-specific product.
