To fix YouTube stream buffering that appears alongside an overloaded CPU warning, first confirm whether OBS is failing to encode, then reduce the encoding workload and check whether the GPU, game, or upload connection is actually the bottleneck. Lower output resolution or change 60 fps to 30 fps if the encoder cannot keep up; test one change at a time under representative gameplay and scenes. A viewer’s playback buffering by itself does not prove your streaming PC’s CPU is overloaded.
First identify which kind of buffering is happening
“Buffering” can describe two different problems: trouble producing and sending your live feed, or trouble playing the feed on a viewer’s device. They need different fixes. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when the encoder’s output looks or sounds poor; if that output is healthy, an outbound internet problem becomes a plausible next check.
- Encoder-side trouble: OBS reports encoding lag or an encoding-overloaded warning, or a local recording also looks or sounds faulty. Investigate encoding workload and system performance.
- Network-side trouble: OBS output appears healthy but YouTube reports stream-health or connection problems. Check upload capacity and stability.
- Viewer-side buffering: the stream appears healthy in OBS and YouTube, but a viewer’s player pauses. That alone does not establish an overloaded CPU on the streaming PC; the viewer’s connection or playback conditions may be involved.
Check OBS and YouTube before changing settings
- In OBS, inspect the status bar and stats for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding lag. Note which counter is increasing rather than treating every dropped-frame indication as a CPU encoding fault.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, read the stream-health status and any messages. Check whether the problem appears in the outgoing feed, in YouTube’s ingest status, or only during viewer playback.
- If you record locally, review a short recording made during the same problem. YouTube advises checking encoder output and CPU load; if local output remains problematic, it also suggests trying a different encoder. A clean local recording does not rule out an upload problem.
- Record your current output resolution, frame rate, encoder, bitrate, and scene setup before testing. Then change one setting at a time and repeat the test with the same game, movement, audio, and OBS scenes you intend to stream.
OBS’s system requirements guidance notes that CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. There is no diagnosis of your particular PC without its settings and performance data.
Reduce the work assigned to the encoder
If OBS specifically reports encoding overloaded, reduce the encoding workload before considering a hardware purchase. OBS recommends lowering output resolution or frame rate; its encoding performance troubleshooting guide includes trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not sustainable.

Use OBS’s Output settings to change the stream’s output resolution, frame rate, or encoder. Keep the rest of the configuration unchanged for each trial so you can tell which adjustment helped. A lower resolution or frame rate is not a universal winner: the best sustainable choice depends on the PC, game, scenes, and audience.
Check GPU rendering and other PC load
Encoding is not the only way a streaming PC can fall behind. OBS must also render and compose scenes, and a demanding game, complex scene, filters, or browser sources can compete for GPU resources. If OBS shows rendering lag rather than encoding lag, lowering the encoder workload alone may not solve the actual bottleneck.

- Cap the game’s frame rate at a level the PC can maintain while OBS is active, or reduce demanding in-game graphics settings.
- Simplify busy OBS scenes and test with costly filters or browser sources disabled. Re-enable items one at a time to identify a particular load source.
- Check whether the game is consuming the GPU resources OBS needs to render. A hardware encoder can reduce CPU encoding work, but it does not eliminate the GPU resources needed for scene rendering.
Make one change per test, and keep the game scene and movement comparable. OBS’s hardware encoding guide explains the CPU-offload option; availability depends on compatible hardware and support.
Verify YouTube encoder settings and upload capacity
When encoder output is healthy but YouTube stream health or delivery is poor, check the upload path. Download speed is not upload speed. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, keeping the total stream bitrate below the available upload capacity, and leaving 20% bandwidth headroom; shared home or office connections may leave less capacity for the stream than the headline connection speed suggests. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current table for your selected mode rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a requirement to exceed the upload capacity available to your stream. If your tested upload cannot sustain the chosen bitrate with headroom, lower the bitrate or choose a less demanding output mode and test again.

Test the fix before going live
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with representative audio, movement, scenes, and sources.
- Watch OBS’s encoding, rendering, and dropped-frame counters while checking YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
- Review the stream or a local recording for image and audio quality, then repeat the test after each individual change.
- During the actual event, keep monitoring stream health. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and checking messages while live.
