Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your YouTube Live stream buffers while FFmpeg reads a video from a network drive, first find out which part of the pipeline is falling behind: the file share, FFmpeg’s processing, or the internet upload. Stream the same file from a local copy with the same FFmpeg command and output settings, then compare FFmpeg’s logs with YouTube’s stream health. A local-copy run that works points toward the input path, but does not by itself identify the cause.
How to identify the source of the buffering
A viewer seeing buffering does not tell you whether the problem is storage, processing, or upload. Use evidence from both ends of the stream: FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips describe platform-side checks; FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains its input and processing behavior.
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The same file plays smoothly from local storage, but the network-share run buffers | The input path is implicated, but the comparison does not establish whether the share, its network route, or read consistency is responsible. | Check the share and the machine’s connection to it; repeat the comparison and collect relevant logs. |
FFmpeg reports speed= below real time |
FFmpeg may not be decoding, filtering, or encoding quickly enough. | Review processing load, filters, and encoder settings. |
| FFmpeg keeps up, but YouTube reports unstable ingestion or stream-health warnings | The outbound connection or its reliability may be the limiting factor. | Measure upload capacity and check YouTube’s messages and stream-health indicators. |
| The viewer sees a problem, but FFmpeg and YouTube show no clear fault | The symptom alone does not identify the failing component. | Check a local archive, if available, for audio or video defects and gather more measurements. |
Run a controlled network-drive versus local-copy test
- Record the setup. Note the FFmpeg version from
ffmpeg -version, operating system, storage protocol or share type, full command with the stream key redacted, and whether the output is transcoded or stream-copied. These details affect which follow-up tuning is relevant. - Copy the identical input file to local storage. An external SSD can be a convenient place to hold the test copy, but the diagnostic value is the comparison, not a particular drive or purchase.
- Repeat the stream using the same command and output settings. Change only the input file location. Keep the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, filters, and other output options so the comparison isolates the input path as much as possible.
- Watch the run in both places. Note FFmpeg’s
speed=statistic and errors. At the same time, review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages. - Check a local archive if the issue returns. If you are recording locally, see whether the archive continues to grow and inspect it for audio or video problems. An archive can help distinguish a damaged or interrupted output from a playback or ingestion symptom.
- Compare the results. If local playback resolves the symptom, investigate the file-share path and read consistency; do not assume that a particular SMB or NFS setting is the cause. If both runs fall behind, investigate FFmpeg processing and outbound upload instead.
Check FFmpeg’s processing before changing options
FFmpeg’s speed= value is a useful signal when the output is intended to run in real time: a value below real time means the processing path is not keeping pace. If it happens with both the network-drive file and the local copy, examine decoding, filters, and the selected encoder before blaming the share. Record the relevant log lines and whether the job transcodes or stream-copies.
Do not treat a larger input buffer or an arbitrary queue-size change as a proven cure for a file-share read stall. FFmpeg documents rtbufsize in connection with memory for buffering real-time frames, while nobuffer reduces buffering latency during initial input analysis; neither is established as a general fix for network-file reads. Likewise, do not add -re indiscriminately: FFmpeg describes -re/-readrate as pacing file input to simulate real-time capture, not as a way to make a slow share read faster. For details, consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation, the FFmpeg all-options documentation, and the FFmpeg option source. The online manual changes with releases, so check the manual for your installed version.

Verify that the upload connection can carry the stream
FFmpeg must send the encoded stream to YouTube continuously. Test the connection’s outbound upload capacity; download speed is not a substitute. YouTube says the outbound connection must be sufficient for the stream bitrate and recommends 20% headroom above the total stream bitrate. A shared connection may also limit what is available to one stream, and disruptions can interrupt it. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
For example, a stream configured at 10 Mbps needs more than 10 Mbps of usable, sustained upload capacity to leave YouTube’s recommended headroom. A headline speed-test result does not guarantee that capacity will remain available throughout a live stream; check stability as well as the measured upload rate.

Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the actual output
Only adjust encoding settings after checking the input path, FFmpeg’s processing speed, and upload capacity. YouTube currently recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Its bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate—not on resolution alone. The current table also covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 ingest settings, so check YouTube’s encoder settings for the combination you actually use.
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended ingest bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a given connection will be stable. If you lower resolution or bitrate to create more upload margin, that trades stream quality for capacity; it will not repair a stalled file read or an overloaded encoder.

Common fixes that do not identify the cause
- Increasing
-thread_queue_sizeor another queue value without logs: no universal value is established for this problem. A queue change cannot make an under-capacity share, encoder, or uplink keep up. - Adding
-reto force real-time reads: this paces file input; it does not cure slow storage reads. Avoid applying it blindly, particularly to actual live or capture inputs. - Raising
rtbufsizeor usingnobufferas a blanket remedy: their documented buffering contexts do not establish either option as a fix for network-share read stalls. - Buying local storage before testing: a local copy is useful as a controlled comparison, not proof that you need to replace the share. It also will not fix upload congestion or encoding overload.
- Reducing bitrate before checking the pipeline: this may help an upload-capacity problem, but it does not explain or resolve a failing input path or slow FFmpeg processing.
What to collect if the problem continues
- FFmpeg version, operating system, and the network-share protocol or type.
- The full FFmpeg command with the YouTube stream key removed.
- Relevant FFmpeg log lines, including errors and observed
speed=values. - Whether the output is transcoded or stream-copied, and the configured codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Results from the network-share and local-copy runs with output settings held constant.
- YouTube Live Control Room health indicators or messages, plus outbound upload measurements taken during the test.
Without those details and measurements, the root cause cannot be narrowed to a particular drive, protocol, FFmpeg option, or network condition.
Copyright and channel eligibility are separate from buffering
Stable delivery does not establish that you have the rights to stream the video or that the channel’s content qualifies for any particular YouTube feature or monetization program. Confirm that you may use the footage, music, and other material in a live broadcast, and check YouTube’s current rules for your channel. Copyright or reused-content issues are separate from whether FFmpeg can read and transmit the file smoothly.
