If FFmpeg appears to skip songs, first find out whether the track is missing from the local playlist playback or only from the YouTube stream. A local skip points toward the playlist, file paths, media compatibility, or timestamps; a track that plays locally but disappears live points toward stream mapping, FFmpeg output, or YouTube ingest. The right fix depends on which side loses it.
Find where the track disappears
Do not start by changing bitrate or encoding settings. Those settings cannot repair a missing playlist entry or an unreadable source file. Play the source sequence locally and compare it with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Note the exact transition where the expected song vanishes.
- Missing locally: inspect the playlist text, paths, file readability, concat compatibility, and durations.
- Present locally but missing or silent live: inspect FFmpeg’s output log, selected streams, network output, YouTube preview, and stream-health messages.
For a useful diagnosis, keep the FFmpeg version, command, playlist text with private paths redacted, and the log around the transition. Never share a real YouTube stream key.
Check the concat playlist and its paths
The concat demuxer reads a script of files and directives sequentially as one virtual input. Check that the script contains every intended file once, in the intended order, and uses the concat demuxer’s expected format. A typo, wrong path base, quoting problem, or faulty generated list can make a song fail to load or leave it out of the sequence.

- Open the playlist and compare its entries with the intended song order.
- Check spelling, capitalization where the filesystem distinguishes it, path base, and quoting for each affected entry.
- Confirm that FFmpeg can open the file at the path shown in the playlist; read the log for input-open errors.
- If you use
-safe 0to allow paths FFmpeg would otherwise reject, use it only with a playlist you control and trust. - Test the last song that plays correctly and the next song that appears to be skipped as a small, controlled sequence.
FFmpeg describes the concat demuxer as reading a list of files and directives and demuxing them one after another as though their packets had been muxed together. See the FFmpeg documentation for concat script syntax and demuxer behavior.
Check whether adjacent tracks are compatible
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. If adjacent tracks differ in stream layout or encoding, stream copy with -c copy does not make them compatible or normalize them. A transition may fail or produce boundary artifacts even when each file plays by itself.

- Inspect the streams of both files around the problem transition: note the audio and video streams, codecs, time bases, and durations.
- Test just those two files with the same playlist method and output settings used for the full stream.
- If the streams are compatible and preserving the original packets is important, stream copy may be appropriate.
- If the files are incompatible, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode them to a common output format. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes the concat filter for cases requiring re-encoding from the concat demuxer option when avoiding re-encoding.
Choose the filter or demuxer based on the actual files and desired output; there is no single safe command for every playlist. The formats, FFmpeg version, destination ingest URL format, and intended video and audio settings matter.
Check durations and timestamps at the transition
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to set the timestamps for the next file. If a stored duration is wrong or was estimated inaccurately—for example, from bitrate—or a file is truncated, the next track can begin at the wrong timestamp and cause boundary artifacts.

- Compare the reported duration with the actual playable length of each file around the skip.
- Inspect truncated files and files with unusual metadata separately; a bad duration is not necessarily a playlist-order problem.
- Use a
durationdirective to override a duration only when you know the correct value.
Changing a duration without verifying it can move the timestamp problem rather than solve it. Consult the concat demuxer section of the FFmpeg documentation for the directive and its effect.
Confirm FFmpeg selected the intended audio stream
A song can appear to be skipped if the expected audio stream is absent from the output or FFmpeg selected a different stream. FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection depends on output-format eligibility and its selection rules; -map lets you choose input streams manually.

- Read FFmpeg’s input stream listing and identify the audio stream that contains the expected track audio.
- Check the output mapping in the log and verify that the intended audio stream is included.
- When automatic selection is unsuitable, add explicit
-mapoptions for the intended audio and video streams, using the stream indexes from your actual input. - Confirm that the resulting output contains audio before blaming YouTube for silence or omissions.
Because stream indexes and layouts vary by input, do not copy a mapping blindly. See the FFmpeg CLI documentation for -map and stream selection.
Separate local playlist correctness from YouTube ingest
If local playback is correct, compare the same point in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and review its stream-health messages alongside FFmpeg’s output log. Look for output or network errors and verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and video, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as streaming protocols and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs; AAC or MP3 audio codecs; and constant bitrate (CBR). The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, with a maximum of four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended advanced settings; for 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Video bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube live encoder settings table instead of treating one bitrate as universal.
These ingest checks address the outgoing stream, not a malformed local playlist or incompatible source files. Fix the layer where the track first goes missing.
Use output recovery only for output interruptions
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has network-output recovery controls, including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. They can help with output continuity when a network stream encounters an error; they do not fix playlist entries, unreadable files, incompatible inputs, or bad durations.
The FIFO muxer can also be configured to drop packets on overflow so processing continues. That may omit part of the stream, so packet dropping is not a lossless fix for a skipped song. Use recovery settings only after confirming the local sequence is correct and the problem lies in output continuity. See the FFmpeg documentation for the FIFO muxer options and trade-offs.
