Fix FFmpeg Audio Out of Sync on an EC2 YouTube Live Stream

Find whether FFmpeg audio sync trouble on an EC2 YouTube livestream is a fixed offset, growing drift, or viewer-side latency—and which settings to check first.

First find out whether the audio is wrong by a steady amount from the start, drifts farther out of sync over time, or only seems delayed in YouTube playback. Check a short local or encoded recording as well as the live stream before changing FFmpeg options: a fixed offset and progressive drift point to different timing problems, and viewer buffering is not the same as audio-video sync.

Diagnose the kind of sync problem first

There is no universal FFmpeg command that fixes every EC2-to-YouTube sync problem. The EC2 setting alone does not identify a cause. Start with a short test containing a clear synchronization reference—such as a visible clap with an audible transient—and compare the same moment in the encoded output and YouTube playback.

What you observe What to investigate first
Audio is late or early by about the same amount from the beginning Input start times, initial timestamps, and a fixed processing delay.
Audio-video separation grows as the stream continues Timestamp continuity, source clock or rate mismatch, and frame-rate behavior.
Local encoded output is synchronized, but YouTube playback is not Compare controlled playback samples and check YouTube stream health before altering FFmpeg timestamps.
Only some viewers report a delay, buffering, or a late-arriving stream Investigate viewer latency and playback conditions separately from A/V sync.

This is a diagnostic framework, not a claim about a particular EC2 root cause. No command, instance type, operating system, FFmpeg build, source layout, or measured offset is specified here, so a precise fix depends on your stream.

Collect the details that reveal where timing changes

Before changing the command, save the exact FFmpeg invocation and version or build information, then note:

  • Whether audio and video come from one input or separate sources, and each input’s start time.
  • The exact -map selections, video frame rate, audio sample rate, and any timestamp, frame-rate, or synchronization options.
  • Whether the same offset or drift is present in a local recording or encoded output, in YouTube playback, or both.
  • Whether the mismatch affects all viewers, and whether it changes over a short, repeatable sample.

For separate audio and video inputs, compare their timestamp origins and how each source supplies timing. A 2020 FFmpeg-user post describes roughly half a second of audio delay after argument order changed in a webcam-and-PulseAudio setup on Ubuntu 20.04 with FFmpeg 4.3.1. It is one anecdotal case—not evidence that argument order generally causes desynchronization or that EC2 is responsible. Read the FFmpeg-user report.

Use FFmpeg timing options only for the problem they address

FFmpeg’s manual documents several controls that can affect timing. They are not interchangeable magic fixes: establish which stream is wrong and whether the mismatch is fixed or progressive before applying one. See the FFmpeg documentation.

-itsoffset: consider for a measured fixed offset

-itsoffset sets an input time offset. It may help compensate for a measured, stable start-time difference. It does not correct a mismatch that continues to grow as the stream runs; for that, investigate ongoing timestamp or rate behavior first.

-fps_mode: understand the output video timing choice

-fps_mode applies per output video stream. The documented modes behave differently:

  • passthrough retains demuxer timestamps.
  • cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach a target constant frame rate.
  • vfr passes timestamps or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps.
  • auto selects a mode based on muxer capability.

FFmpeg notes that timestamps may be modified later by the muxer. Changing frame-rate handling without understanding the source and output timing can alter video behavior without addressing the actual audio problem.

-copyts: retaining timestamps can retain their problems

-copyts preserves input timestamp values without FFmpeg’s normal sanitizing behavior. That can be useful when the source timestamps are valid and need to be preserved, but it can also carry a source timing problem forward.

-re and -readrate 1: do not add reflexively to live capture

FFmpeg describes -re (or -readrate 1) as reading input at its native frame rate, useful for controlling input flow when producing live output. Its manual warns against low read rates on actual capture devices or live streams because packet loss may result. Identify the input type before considering a read-rate option.

Check YouTube contribution settings without confusing them with sync repair

YouTube’s encoder guidance is a compatibility baseline, not a method for correcting bad A/V timestamps. Its current recommendations include:

Rate control CBR
Audio format AAC or MP3
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; should not exceed 4 seconds
Audio sample rate 44.1 kHz for stereo; 48 kHz for 5.1
Audio bitrate 128 kbps for stereo; 384 kbps for 5.1

Test before the event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs. Correct encoder settings do not by themselves establish that timestamps are aligned. Read YouTube’s encoder settings.

Verify RTMPS connection details separately

For YouTube RTMPS ingest, confirm that the protocol is rtmps, the ingestion endpoint and path are correct, the connection uses port 443, and the server hostname is supplied in TLS SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS guide associates SSL errors and timeouts with checking the protocol, port, hostname/SNI, and TLS setup. These are connection checks, not a direct audio-sync remedy. The guide was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC. Read the RTMPS ingestion guide.

Separate YouTube viewer latency from A/V synchronization

Latency is how long the stream takes to reach a viewer; A/V sync is whether the sound matches the picture. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer, which can make encoder or player issues more noticeable. Congestion and other factors can delay a live stream even when average network capacity seems adequate. Check stream health and compare controlled samples before changing timestamp handling to address what may instead be playback buffering.

YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience latency under 10 seconds, and most on ultra-low-latency streams experience latency under 5 seconds. These are service-level descriptions, not A/V-sync tolerances or guarantees for each viewer; ultra-low latency also carries increased buffering risk. Read YouTube’s latency guidance.

What the cloud context does—and does not—tell you

AWS documents FFmpeg as an RTMP contribution encoder in a cloud MediaLive/MediaPackage workflow, and separately provides an FFmpeg streaming example for AWS IVS. These show that cloud-hosted FFmpeg contribution workflows are established patterns; neither is a direct prescription for synchronizing an EC2 stream to YouTube. They do not establish a particular EC2 clock, CPU, instance, network, or platform fault in your case.

Troubleshoot “FFmpeg audio out of sync” on a YouTube livestream

Audio is behind video from the start

Measure the offset in a local or encoded sample and check the inputs’ start times and timestamps. If the delay is stable, a measured input offset may be worth testing with -itsoffset. Verify the result in the output before applying it to a live run.

Audio slowly drifts out of sync on a YouTube livestream

Do not treat a growing offset as a fixed start delay. Inspect the audio and video timestamp continuity, separate source clocks or rates, and frame-rate behavior. Check whether the drift is already present in a local encoded sample; only then decide whether FFmpeg timing behavior or YouTube playback is the relevant place to investigate.

FFmpeg stream audio is behind video on EC2, but only in YouTube playback

Compare the same moment in a controlled local output and YouTube playback, check stream health, and establish whether the issue affects all viewers. Consider viewer buffering and latency before changing timestamp options that may be correct for the encoded output.

The stream has connection errors or timeouts

Check the RTMPS scheme, endpoint and path, port 443, TLS configuration, and hostname/SNI against YouTube’s ingestion guide. A connection error is not, by itself, evidence of an A/V timing fault.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live by looping uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option—not an FFmpeg or EC2 sync fix. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
