Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If a recorded lesson is black in OBS, first check whether the OBS preview itself is black and whether the lesson is loaded as a visible, supported media source. Then check playback settings and decoding. If the preview is fine but YouTube is disconnecting, investigate the stream connection instead: those are different problems. The title alone cannot identify a single cause, so use the checks below to narrow it down before relying on the stream.
First identify where the picture disappears
Look at the active OBS scene and preview while the lesson is supposed to play. Note whether the preview is black, whether lesson audio continues, whether the lesson source is visible in the scene, and whether YouTube shows a black picture or instead reports dropped frames or disconnections.
- OBS preview is black: start with the source, its visibility and playback settings, and decoding.
- Preview shows the lesson but YouTube does not: compare the actual stream output with the preview and inspect OBS logs; the available facts do not establish the cause.
- The stream drops frames or disconnects: treat this as a connection or ingest-route problem, not as proof that the local media file is black. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide addresses network stability and bitrate in that context.
Record whether audio continues and whether the source becomes visible or active. These observations help distinguish a media-source or rendering issue from a connection symptom.
Check the lesson’s Media Source
OBS’s built-in Media Source is designed for media files and supports a list of common video and audio extensions. In the active scene, select the lesson’s Media Source and inspect its properties.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm Local File points to the intended lesson file, not a moved, renamed, or different copy.
- Check that the file’s extension appears in OBS’s supported formats on the Media Sources documentation page. A familiar extension alone does not establish that every file using it will play correctly.
- Confirm the source is enabled and visible in the active scene. If it is hidden or covered by another scene element, the lesson may not appear even if playback is working.
- Set Loop if the lesson should repeat. Use Restart playback when source becomes active if it should start from the beginning when shown.
- Choose Show nothing when playback ends if you do not want the final frame left on screen after the lesson ends.
- Use Close file when inactive only if its reload behavior suits the scene. Because this closes the file while the source is inactive, verify that the lesson opens and resumes as intended when the source becomes active again.
These controls determine playback lifecycle and visibility; OBS does not document any one of them as a universal black-screen fix.
Test hardware decoding as a controlled change
Media Source offers Use hardware decoding when available. OBS describes this as asking the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has the appropriate decoder. If the source is black, toggle this option and compare playback, changing no other setting during the test. If behavior changes, record which state works for this file and system; the documentation does not promise that enabling or disabling it will resolve every black screen.

When to try VLC Video
OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and can be useful when you need extended media support. It is an alternative source path, not a guaranteed cure.
- Install VLC if VLC Video is not available among the OBS sources.
- Match architectures: OBS’s documentation requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
- Load the lesson through VLC Video and test its playlist and visibility behavior in the scene before using it in the continuous stream.
Choose between Media Source and VLC Video based on the file’s compatibility and the software environment. The documentation does not establish that either source is categorically more reliable for every stream.

Reduce rendering load if the symptom is lag or overload
A black picture is not automatically a performance problem. But if the lesson stutters, rendering lags, or OBS reports overload, reduce scene work and test again. OBS explains: “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene.” See its Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide.
- Use lesson media at a resolution appropriate to the output rather than unnecessarily oversized files.
- Simplify complex scenes and remove sources the stream does not need.
- Limit resource-heavy filters and excessive browser sources.
- Use Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio files, as OBS recommends.
OBS lists baseline requirements for Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (“Big Sur”) or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. These are requirements, not a guarantee of capacity for a particular workload: OBS states, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS.” Details are on the System Requirements page.

Test the complete lesson scene before leaving it live
OBS recommends a short test before relying on a stream. Its Quick Start Guide says: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream.”
- Run a short test recording or stream with the lesson source in the intended scene.
- Check the picture and audio, then test switching away from and back to the lesson if your setup does that.
- Confirm the end-of-playback behavior and, if applicable, that looping restarts as expected.
- Return to the normal scene and verify that the intended source is visible.
This guidance supports a short check, not a specific 24/7 soak-test duration.

What to collect if the black screen remains
Do not assume the codec, GPU, or YouTube is at fault without evidence. For a useful diagnosis, note the operating system and OBS version; the lesson’s container and codec if known; source type and properties; hardware-decoding state; whether audio continues; whether the preview differs from the stream output; and what happens when the source becomes active. Capture an OBS log from a reproduction so the source and rendering behavior can be examined.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded lessons playing on YouTube without leaving OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for continuous YouTube streams. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
- Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to continue.
- Uploaded video streams at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
